Great local restaurant one worth supporting due to the fantastic service and good food. Like the new decor though the lighting is a bit bright!! Great place, wish we had more like it on Shirley High Street.

We went here last night for a 70th birthday party, there was 35 of us, could not fault the food or the service, the restaurant is great and the food we had off the set menu was superb....I can highly recommend the chicken, but my Fiance's lamb was great, overall a fantastic night and we both cant wait to go there again very soon. A big thanks to the Irish waitress!!

Went to Toyk over xmas which was really enjoyable. The atmosphere was lively and buzzing as you would expect for xmas. The food was beautiful, a nice selection of A La Carte, responsibly priced for the quantity and excellent service. The staff went all out to ensure your time was enjoyable. Definitely recommend going there, best place to eat in Shirley.

Despite the price i would have to say that is one of the best restaurants in the area, due in no small part to the great efforts of the staff who are very attentive offering guidance on the best things to choose from their array of appetising dishes, I would say that the recent decorating and the non smoking have helped the atmosphere by leaps and bounds.
The last time i went to Toyk was a few months ago and the service left something to be desired, but in the spirit of giving another go i went once a few weeks ago and decided to go again twice more, once for lunch and twice for dinner, on all of these occasions the charming Holly was more than just the average empty smile you may find in other local restaurants, and made it a very nice dining experience, coupled with the excellent food, (complements to the chef) I have and will continue to recommend it to others. Toyk may have had its problems in the past but i now think it truly is a Star of Shirley!

Some of the food was great, could be a great restaurant. some of the items on menu weren't as described and weren't as fresh as expected. mouldy dessert served to my pregnant friend which could be dangerous, staff  apologetic but no compensation offered until pushed (only wanted free dessert in place of mouldy one). feel that place would be great if busy, but some ingredients stale. would not return

I have visited this restaurant twice in the last couple of weeks and both times have been outstanding. Both times we have given our compliments to the chef which is not something I have ever done anywhere before. We have told our friends about it and plan to come again this week.

I have been to toyk a lot, about three times a month and never had bad service. The food is fantastic and the service is second to none. I think if you are pleasant to your waitress and don't treat them badly they will be pleasant back i would definitely go back again and again my compliments to the chef.

Very good portions, food was very tasty. Quite good selection of food.  Only downside was it was quite smoky as there were a lot of people sat at the bar...

We have been 4 or 5 times now, including lunch and evening, weeknight and weekend. My only real complaints are having to wait an age for a table despite booking, and the inconsistency in the quality of the service. It is usually good, but on one occasion, a female member of staff who looked like she could be a manager/supervisor took a real disliking to being asked how much longer our drinks would be. (It had been 15mins since ordering) For the rest of the evening all we got were blatant evil glares! At one point she was clearly discussing us with another party in the restaurant whilst serving them their food!

My husband and I have eaten at Toyk on several occasions and have always had excellent food and faultless service i am extremely surprised by some of the comments on this site. Sunday evenings are great with a relaxed atmosphere and good live music.

I have only eaten at lunch time in Toyk on a number of occasions and find it more relaxed after the 12-2pm lunch rush. The staff are pleasant, even if less than confident. The food is always excellent and its the only place that knows how to make a good cup of coffee in Shirley. The only let down is that it is not smoke-free as this tends to spoil your meal if you are a none smoker.

I haven't eaten there so can't talk about the food. But as a bar it is a great, relaxed and chilled place. Only been in since 2006 so presume it has had a refurb since some of the comments on here.  Great pints, great and friendly staff, nice modern decor with big comfy leather sofas and a great mix of people in there too. Shirley needs more places like this rather than the stuffy scruffy pubs. Great place for a chilled drink, would recommend to anyone!

We arrived early on a Saturday night for a special meal - they forgot us. To add to that they seated two other couples first despite telling us our table would be ready in five minutes. The staff were obviously well under pressure, but it seemed as though the function upstairs had taken over the place entirely.  We eventually ordered and the selection from the deli we had was delicious. However, the waitress then forgot to bring our drinks and then when the food arrived the duck was horrible.  It was completely burnt around the outside and raw in the middle. We sent it back, but the staff obviously did not care that we were not happy with the meal. The place has potential to be fantastic, but the extortionate prices for poor quality food is unacceptable. I wouldn't go again and definitely don't go on a function night unless you are invited.

I went for a meal for my friends birthday and it as excellent. Being a table of girls the waitress wasn't exactly given an easy order!! However it wasn't a problem to alter the dishes slightly for us. The waitress was superb and so was the food. Will definitely be going back there again and recommended it all my friends and family. As for the decor I don't know where those previous muppets went but I thought it was well suited to the atmosphere of the restaurant. Well Done Toyk!!!

My experience of Toyk was very good. I had a delicious homeade steak and kidney pie from the newly changed menu. Although they were busy, atmosphere was pleasent and service was excellent. Will definatly be going back for more.

Toyk is a fabulous restaurant and bar, the staff are lovely, especially Holly who served us throughout the meal. Just had a gorgeous meal of fishcakes to start and beef medallions for mains.  I shall definitely be returning on a regular basis.

Well I don't know where to start, I had booked a table a week in advance and when I got their a had to wait 30 mins for my table! (Talk about young labour, the waitresses only looked about 14) Ok the menu did look appetising but once the food arrive 45 mins later it was stone cold with a stingy bit of lettuce on the side. You would have thought this would be a 5 star restaurant for the prices you have to pay. No one either bothered to ask if the food was ok or if we would like to order for extra drinks. Would not recommend if you are wanting a quite night with half decent food and service. I WONT BE GOING BACK IN A HURRY!!!!

I am regular at Toyk and go at least 2 to 3 times a month with my boyfriend. My family go as do my friends and never once have I or they had cause to complaint.
Ok - a refurb wouldn't do any harm, but the service is excellent and the food is always delicious and very well presented. We often go on Sunday for the 2 course special at £10 - whether you go for the lamb or beef, I'm sure you'll be impressed with the quality of the food.

Not sure if fellow reviewers went to the same restaurant that i have just returned from, however i thought the place was outstanding. If you want a decent meal where you'll be treated and greeted by warm and friendly staff, go to Toyk in Shirley :) The specials were written clearly on the board and neatly on the board but were still eloquently relayed to me by my waitress - a polite young lady who helped me choose from the extensive menu... No regrets! I'll be back as soon as I can for the live jazz evening on a Sunday, and to work my way through the delicious menu...

The service in this place was terrible! waiter had not got a clue he got my order completely wrong! when the food arrived it was stone cold! The decor is so tacky, thought this was supposed to be a classy place, huh! would not recommend!

Good atmosphere with outstanding food. Service can be good or bad (I think it depends how busy it is). The menu is creative and offers "something different" with a price which is above what you would expect to pay at a restaurant in Shirley. This isn't a normal restaurant in Shirley, however - it is great!

Having had some good reports about TOYK, I gave it a go. Whilst the 'centrepiece' of each dish was faultless (Steak and Lemon Sole), the starters (Crab Cakes) were tasteless and the side dishes were terrible (greasy chips, stringy rocket salad, salty peas). Combine that with a warm bottle of wine, cheap decor, smoky environment and a bill that wouldn't be out of place in The Boot or Malt Shovel, a decent steak and friendly service are not enough to make me want to come back.

 A wonderful place to eat, drink, chat. Staff absolutely lovely, very friendly and chatty. Although there is not an extensive menu, the food is fabulous and cooked to perfection. Live Music nights excellent. I have been to Toyk 5 times both to eat and just for a drink and I really cannot fault the place. Excellent.
