What a trip that place was - I was a terror from the day I got there -had something to do with being a boarder, termly at that... Let me think, I received a bamboo cane, a solid stick, a rubber slipper and a table tennis bat, all across the backside. They finally threw me out for taking a day off with some bikers! Ah, the memories!! Hung out with Steve Cole, the newsman, who was in my class. The best thing about Solihull was St. Martin's school for ripe young girls... Moved to Florida in '82 and never looked back.
All the best
Paul Felix-Davies

I have submitted a photo for your website of a group of four six formers at Solihull School.  I said this was autumn 1980, but it must have been autumn 1979 as this was when we were in Lower Sixth. Lower Sixth Autumn 1979. L-R, Angus McDonald, Madeleine Hughes, Adrienne Attwood and Brian Turner. Sent by Simon Evans now living in Derbyshire. I had a 1960 soft top Land Rover which I still have.

Would anyone know the contact details for John Monnington, he would have been a pupil in the 60's.  He was a practicing solicitor in Birmingham but I have lost touch.
Thanks

Any one know the whereabouts of John Harding Smith or Barry Preece both of whom left in the early 60's
Mike Fielding

Jago 45-52 I left UK in 1964 bound for sydney town and have lived firstly in NSW and from 1972 in Queensland both in Brisbane and in the bush (for 23yrs) My wife Del and I have retired to St Lucia (Brisbane) with the odd trip o/seas. Great to see Bugs Boulton on this website and Dave Britt-I met Mike Britt in Sydney back in 1966.  I was sole supporter (local) at the rugby fixture School v Toowoomba Grammar in 2002. Hello Jim O'Gorman  Do you still have red hair?  well, reddish?  Paul Abbey was out here a while back and is coming this year. Bumped into a chap from Cedarhurst whom I later knew through Solihull Methodist Church . That was in Dalby, a small town around 260Km west of Brisbane. Also met the local community nurse who close friend is a pal of Jeff Rolfe's daughter, Brenda. Some folks with whom we are friendly at the local Anglican church, Christ Church, St Lucia, have relatives in Silhill Hall Road. Not such a big world eh?  Look  forward to hearing from any contemporaries
Brian Foster

I lived in Solihull until 1970 and went to Solihull School from 1958 - 1964.
I was on the Youth Council around 1960 when the infamous Hamish was youth officer. I ran a youth club in Solihull in the then Congregational Church Hall. Anyone from around that time who remembers me or any of the following?
Bob Grayson, Hugh Joseph, Pete Bradley, John Pedricks (Pegs) Jackie Flavell, Sue Bailey, Sue Buleigh, Anthea Saunders.
Mike Beamish

I used to attend Cedarhurst School 1954-1960 and lived on The Crescent, just a few houses from
Robert Watson, son of Dr. Harold and Barbara Watson. Robert attended Solihull School, after leaving Ruckleigh School, and would have been at Solihull School until approximately 1964. He then went to Birmingham University where he graduated in medicine.
The last time I saw him was after his marriage to Ruth, when I visited him in 1975 in Caerphilly where he had a medical practice. That same year I emigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. Robert, if you or any of your friends and associates read this, please contact me. It would be wonderful to get back in touch.
Donald Carter

1950's

I was in School House 1951 -56. It was 'interesting'. My favourite masters were Swotty Ansell, whose enthusiasm for his subject and bizarre style made me at last understand maths, and Timber Johnson for being a sympathetic form master and quite brilliant at Chaucer. Earlier this year I met 'John' Jammes who was giving a talk on his experiences as a member of the maquis to the English Speaking Union in Bedfordshire. He said that he remembered me as being "a very naughty boy"!
Jim Gledhill

...Barrel to all of you, I suppose, who mocked me for my embonpoint 1948-58. Shed that, fled that too, and grew to wisdom in 'me jewel and darling' Dublin', then Canada. Some fame, no fortune yet, barnacled with memories, but still chasing dreams.  Drop me a line and, if you chance to be in Stratford, Ontario, drop by.  I'll buy you a beer!
Robin Jones

I was in Pole House 1946-1952 when I emigrated to the USA. Best friends were John Hudson and Ian Cutler. I am looking for any photos from that time frame for inclusion in a personal history project I am working on. Any suggestions?
David Thornell

I remember Norman Jones as a kinder senior when I started as a junior boarder at the tender age of eleven. Instead of saying white rabbits on the first of the month he would exclaim snowy bunnies! Hope this doesn't embarrass you Norman. I have used the term ever since. Regards,
Chris Hepworth

I was at Solihull until 1954 when I left to live in Canada. Apart from a few years in Malaya (Malaysia) and Australia I have been in Canada ever since. I work as an editor and a free lance copywriter both of which I hope to stop soon - it's retirement time.  I'd to hear from anybody who remembers me.
Lionel Varnish

I attended Solihull School through the mid fifties to early sixties when Hitchens was the Headmaster. I remember "Swotty" Ansell (I hated maths!) "Tiger" Haines (History I think) and a French teacher nicknamed "Froggy" but I can't remember his surname.  I knocked around with a lad called Mick Jones who's father was a big wheel in the T.G.W.U. but wouldn't know where he is these days. Played drums for the "Invaders" who had regular gigs at the Silhillians club in the mid sixties. (Those were the days!) Left England in 1968 to search for fortune and fame and after 20 years in New Zealand and now 16 years in Australia I'm still searching for it.
If anybody knows of Mick Jones' whereabouts I'd be grateful for a contact.
Ken Nickless

I attended Solihull School 1945-54, and still carry the scars (ha ha!). Actually, my memories are mainly positive ones; the staff, with the occasional sadistic exception, were a devoted body of men (and women, too, for the younger boys).
I remember being a thorough pain in the neck for some years. In retrospect, there were reasons for it, although I did not realise that at the time.  I particularly remember Barry Newey, who was mercilessly bullied for practically the whole time he was at the School. Dickie Burrell, one of the more "caring" teachers, told us that we would remember, and regret, this in later life - the agenbite of inwit. How right he was. And Jimmie Lowe, who was practically the only boy who dared to make a friend of Barry. Jimmie's qualities were rather concealed by an unpolished exterior; it took me a long time to realise his excellence as a person. Suicides among the staff were not common, but the losses of the Headmaster, Henry (? - who would have dared to use his first name?) Hitchens and Raymond Ansell, some years after I had left, made me wonder what was going on up there.
Well, I am now living in Norwich, having retired from teaching at UEA some years back. I would very much welcome hearing from anyone of my year, or thereabouts.

1940's
School House '46-'52. Teaching in Australasia since 1960; Australian citizen from 1970: if you can't beat 'em... Any survivors from '46 still out there in cyberspace? A special word of thanks to Mr Tomlin. Fine school, brilliant staff. I owe them everything.
J. P. O'Gorman (James/Jim/Jimmy)

I was at school from 1939 to 1946 and was sad to read the other day of the death of one of my contempories, Peter Greenwell.  He lived in Hampton and was a very gifted pianist and subsequently became a composer and arranger.  He used to play boogie woogie in the music room at lunch times with one of us keeping an eye open for the return of the music master.
David Walter

Is there anybody out there who was a boarder in 1942-43? If so, they might remember me. My mother was the matron then, and we both lived in the old school building and had our meals with the boys. I remember Newey (probably the one John Boulton mentions, and another boy who was bullied, called Herzfeld.
Dot Walker

I did my time from 1948 to 1955.   The French teacher's name was Hughes.   I'd be glad to hear from Terry Oldham, Tony Chaplin, John Draysey.  I remember that name John Boulton, but not the person.   The bullying given to a lad called Pete Foyer was never picked up by the teaching staff.  remember Morle, John Way and Fisher among the teachers.
Geoffrey Roberts

1949-1955.  I teach in Vancouver, BC, Canada. You can google my article in the 2003 Silhillian. I'm in touch with David Hunter, William Kerkham, and teacher David Turnbull. It was said of me by Bernard Davis that I was 'clever but slothful', and by Ernie (of the beady eyes) Halstead that I was a class 'ringleader in the most childish antics'. I have not changed. I teach creative writing to 17 year olds!
John Gellard

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who left in the late 40s
Barrie Richards

I left Solihull in 1949, and have been at McMaster University in Canada since 1968.
I would be glad to hear from any contemporary.
Norman Jones
1930's
I am trying to trace anyone who was at Solihull with my father Roy Hubner or his 2 brothers in the 30's. I am also trying to trace his war history and need the regiment he was attached 2. My father died ,aged 45, in 1969 and we would like to complete some missing pieces in his life. My father was apparently a very good swimmer and won many school competitions any info from old boys gratefully received.
Anne Morley (nee Hubner)
