1980's |
I went
to Sharman's Cross in the 80s and certainly remember those days well. Mr
Thomas was the head teacher at the time and he ran the school
fantastically. I consider my self lucky for being a pupil at Sharman's
Cross
Glyn Manning
I left Sharmans the year it got closed down. There weren't many pupils
left in the last year but if anyone else was in that year I would love to hear from you.
Joanne Endall
Anyone out there from Sharmans Cross Secondary 1981-1987?
Alex Hughes
I left Sharmans Cross in 1983. I did hear there was a reunion last year
but mist it! Would like to hear from anyone who may remember me. I'm now living in
Newquay, and have just started my own business making surfboards.
Oblong Surfboard Co.
Steve Hendon
I have set up a reunion website specific to Sharmans Cross school at: www.sharmanscross.co.uk I found your site by
searching Google.
Please note this is a new generic front end and does not contain much content yet. Got to
the old site for 1982 which is linked in the welcome message... That has a lot more
content but is specific to 1982.

Western Australia in 1992 and would love to catch up with some old colleagues.

1975-1980. There are very few people that I'd like to contact from those
nightmarish days, but if anyone remembers Mrs Creed's peppermint earrings, Miss Scobey's
book of witchcraft, Mr Whitmore smelling the daffodils in times of stress, or Mrs Swinscoe
(nee Hawksford), I'd love to swap tales. p.s. What ever happened to Rachel Darby
& Karina Morrisey?
Craig MacDonald
I was at the school between 1973-1978. I was in 1g1-5g1. My
best friend was Angela Rogers. ( I was the short one!). We went round in a group of
six most of the time. The others were Gail Mansell ( now in Australia), Cheryl Reeves, Kay
Stephan & Melanie Lomas. (whereabouts not known ). It would be great if any one
remembers us and would like to get in touch. I am still in frequent touch with Ange
and she speaks to Gail quite often. Look forward to Hearing from you as I have fond
memories of those times - plus Ange & I hit the big 40 next year.

I would like to hear from any one who was at the school between
1973-1978. I was in 1g1-5g1. We had Miss Bastock for English, in one of the huts,
and my friend Angela Rogers and i led an escape out of the window during one of the
lessons. I also remember Miss Barnett who we had for P.E. Also the fierce competition
between the classes - remember the girls hockey competition. I seem to recall 5g1
absolutely thrashing 5g2. I am still in frequent contact with Ange and she regularly speaks
to Sheila Hughes who now lives in Newcastle and also with Gail Mansell who now lives in
Australia. As we are all going to (or may have already done so) hit the big 40 it would be
great to get in touch with some of the ex pupils and staff.
Jan Pitt .... Jane Haste tried to
contact - please re-submit email address
I went to Sharmans Cross from 1971 to 1977. I remember the air raid
shelter and playing down the ditches with my school friends Caroline King and Christene
Miles also Annette Stynes, Gail Panter, and Vivian Phippin. Does anybody know any of these
people mentioned or there whereabouts? Please get in touch.
Sue Hart
I would like to contact old Sharmans Cross High School pupils and
teachers especially those who left or were teaching in 1975. With a view to arranging a
get together. Topics to come under discussion are almost certain to be:-
The air raid shelter half way down the playing field where all plans were hatched and
liaisons made! Miss Bastocks Moggy minor (complete with Moggies!) Hobsons Choice. Stuart
Mcgill who we all fell in love with! The 'Monastery disco' and the 'Track ' The number of
times the 'Eleanor Ridgby assembly was trudged out. '(Usually with me and my best friend
Linda Cockburn Reading it!!) And the wonderful piece of educational forward planning that
decided that the ideal year to try out the moving of girls from an all girls school over
the road to the boys school would be during their exam year!!!
Suddenly after years of segregation we were moved over to a school completely full of
aliens! No work was done I swear in that final year!
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers any of those things mentioned or has any
other memories (Perhaps the Leamington Festival and the bloody big drum. Or standing
outside Dave Hills house (Of Slade Fame) forever waiting for a glimpse of him.
Helen Capps

I attended Sharmans Cross from 1969 to 1974 moving on to complete my 'A'

West Midlands League. I have spent the last 25 years working in IT.

Did my time at Sharmans from '65 to '71. Remember Dave Price, Nigel Watkins,
Richard (blind Dick) Millington, the Scadding twins, Martin (Bill) Bailey,
Martin Buckley, Dale Skelly, Nick Turvey, Andy Stoyle and many more dubious
characters; Most of whom I haven't see for 40 years. I recall being a member
the infamous form 2B of '66 under Mr Crease that became a legend in its own
lunchtime. I still live in the area although I didn't realize the old place
was gone until years after. Smoking in the spinney, standing under the
clock all lunch time, playing tricks on the caretaker; those were the days.
Ho Hum! Anybody of a similar vintage still out there?
Andy Barnfield

I was a pupil at Sharmans Cross Junior School from about 1958 until about
1962(when the queen opened the new Town Hall in Solihull). I have happy
memories of Mr Sparks (class 4west).I enjoyed drawing and once produced my
own sketch map of the surrounding area. Mr Sparks predicted I might go into
mapmaking, and he was right, I spent 28 years working as a draughtsman for
Ordnance Survey! I also remember the headmaster, Mr Shepherd, who I believe
soon after retired to live in Wiltshire. I still have an old photo of the
football team alongside Mr Sparks and Mr Shepherd.
Peter
Baker
I attended Sharman's Cross High School for girls from 1966-69 starting in
the middle of the 3rd year after completing my 1st senior year at Hall Green
Bilateral then doing 6 months of my 2nd senior year at West Bromwich Grammer
- my parents were forever moving house. They had a string of Fish and Chip
Shops - One in Hall Green called the Kingfisher. My family were living in a
lovely bungalow in Bills Lane during my time at S.C.H.S. Can't remember the
names of too many others but did have pretty close friendships with Ruth
Weaver, Joan Caney, Anne Longstaff, Elizabeth Dowe and Nikki Parlow. Ruth
and Joan used to come with me to ride my pony. Ruth, I still remember the
time we were riding our bikes along the side of the canal (in the middle of
winter) returning home after horseriding, and you had the misfortune to fall
off your bike and ended up in the filthy water. I just about split my sides
laughing at you and laughed even louder when that dead rat went floating by
just after you had got out onto the bank - much to your disgust. I can
remember Miss Downes, Miss James, Mrs Probert. I got married in 1973
and in 1974 emigrated to New Zealand where I still live - it is such a
beautiful country. Liz Dowe visited me a couple of years later when she was
on her big O.E. but have since lost touch. I have 2 daughters - one lives
here in NZ and the other moved to Queensland, Australia, 4 years ago. We
came back to England for a trip in 1978 but after 4 weeks I decided I wasn't
interested in returning and couldn't wait to get back to NZ. My first
marriage ended in divorce in 1989 and I remarried a KIWI in 2000 and between
us we have 10 beautiful grandchildren. Kevin has 3 sons.
We now live in the Bay of Plenty and I have beautiful views to the
north/west of the Tauranga Harbour and the Kaimai Hills. Our small
community has a population of approximately 2,500. If anybody can remember
me or if any of my old friends mentioned above read this I would love to
hear from them.

Harris and his slipper, Brian Burchett who became head boy, Paul Jenkins and
Rob Harding. I would like to hear from anyone that was in 4a when I left..
Now working for BT but retire this year.
Roger Elliott
I was at S.C.H.S. for Girls 1963-69. Miss Rushton left during this time
and Mrs Beales replaced her. I saw her last year attending an event at the
library theatre. The last form I was in was Miss James'. I remember her and
Miss Bates, Mrs Spegley (?) and her dog 'Larry Lamb'. Mr Evans, Miss Downs,
Mrs Probert and a few others. I didn't like the school much. I was very
quiet but I could run. I used to roll my skirt up at the top and wear Hush
Puppies. I envied the girls with boyfriends and scooters, the Mods, usually
going to the Wilsons in Knowle. I was friends with Gill Beeney and remember
a few names. Sometimes going round Solihull and Shirley I see faces I
recognise. The smell of milk in the corridors, a science teacher who didn't
like me. The way I cooked banana fritters for my cookery exam and they
burned. Daft things like feeding the horse in a field where there's now a
pub the Sharman's Cross. I think everything I've ever done since re.
education has been in defiance of what the teachers said when I left - that
I'd never amount to much!
Liz Rawson (Webber)
I was at Sharmans Cross School from 1962 - 1968

how we celebrated. I moved up to Staffordshire in 1967/8 and we lost touch. If anyone
knows of his whereabouts or if he reads this then please contact me.
Robert Winchurch
I was at the school when Mandy RD came and I also remember Miss Rushton
telling us girls that we could all be as successful as Mandy if we worked hard!!!!! I bet
she regretted saying that! If anyone wishes to own up to knowing me I would love to hear
from you. I was at the school 1960 onwards till 6th form

There from 1949 (Mrs Wilkinson's 'Baby Class') to 1956 (Joe (brown suit)
Sparks) when 'Pepper Pot' was Head, and would be delighted to hear from
anyone who remembers me. I lived at 167 Welford Road. A circuitous route has
brought me to Minions on Bodmin Moor, the highest village in Cornwall,
shared with sheep, horses and cattle. There were no sheep or cattle in
Welford Road, but both the bread van and milk float were horse-drawn. Were
those the days?
Colin Robbins
I attended Sharmans Cross School from 1954 to 1959. Miss Rushton was
Headteacher. Teachers I remember are Miss Bastock, Miss Wentworth, Mrs.
Hassell, Miss Hicks, Miss Sykes, Mr. Cressick and Mr.Warrilow was the
caretaker. My friends were Glenys Astley and Brenda Adkins. I still see
Glenys regularly, she now lives in Reading and also meet up with Jillian
Bussey (now Amiss). I remember names such as Pat Rose, Jennifer Rabin, Diane
Whitman, Gillian Humphries, Frances Dyson. I have stayed in Solihull living
only a mile away from my childhood home. In answer to Christine Adkins - I
have not see or hear from Brenda Adkins - she used to live in Elmdon Heath
when she married. We used to cycle to school together. I have been retired
for 2 years now having worked in schools after having 3 children. Wonder if
anyone remembers me.
Gillian Wells (now Tomlins)
Hi, I attended the X from 1955 until 1959 in the B stream throughout. Some
names I recall from that period include Dave Nash, Peter Bowen, David Field,
Clive Daniels, Alex Grant, George Cave, Robert Hay, Snowy Parsons, Colin
Alder, Robert Winchurch, David Wright and if I think hard enough, many more
of the forty or so fourth years in 1959. I would be pleased to hear from
anyone, it may jog memories if I say that my family lived in the old cottage
next to the Prince of Wales, Solihull Lodge. Best wishes to all, regards
Roger
Briggs
I was there until 1960. Remember Mr Bain (metal plate in his head from the
war I was told), Mr Watts, great guy if you didn't get hit with his slipper,
Mr Wykart (got 13 of the best for hitting him on the back of the head with
the slide of a slide rule launched from back of class). The worst thing was
getting nailed by Mr. York for taking a semi secret bomb to school and
dismantling it in the metal work shop. Got several people including an army
officer into trouble. I imagine all the Masters have gone to better things
now.
Martyn Garrett
As I recall my school days ran from 1954 - 1960.I travelled through school
in the "A" stream but was not the most attentive pupil according to Mr Bain
who if he considered you were not concentrating he would send you for a run
round the games field, and woe betide you if you tried to cut corners he
would send you round again and the teacher who would take hold of your
sideburns and twist them Mr Scott. Mr Adams was R.K master and would ride
his upright bicycle through the playground puffing a cigarette. Mr Roper was
games master and one year those that won the event on sports day went on to
the area schools event he always tried to make me change my grip on the
javelin but to no avail on the day of the school sports in frustration he
told me I would get nowhere throwing it like a dart, to his consternation
and my surprise I threw a school record. Married for 45 years and having
lived in coventry, torquay, woodley near Reading we now live in a village in
cornwall, regrettably I have no pictures of school days as my mother was
very ill after my fathers death and all memorabilia vanished. boys i knew at

Hello, I'm Claire, the grandaughter of a Pat Martin nee Ettritch, who
attended sharmans cross around the 1950s, my grandmother remembers helen
stokes, margaret morgan, betty wattis, her head mistress was miss rotherford,

Ettritch and was wondering if you are related to each other if this is
correct please contact me:
Pat Martin nee Ettritch
I was at Sharmans Cross School from 1953 - 1957 before they moved it. I seem
to recall one of the teachers called Mr Watts? and a guy that sat at the
same desk as me called Priddy? At the time I was living in Dorridge and had
to cycle too & from school each day (on a School Bike!) until they changed
my transport to a train journey from Dorridge to Solihull. Would welcome any
communication from around the same era
Ron Suley
I was at sc until 1957,the last class i was in was form 4x at the mill lane
annex, centre of solihull. anyone remember it .our teachers basil hicks and
mr.rudge. what about the shuttlecock games in the playground. micheal
hickey, jim parker where are you now ,anyone remember rondevous cafe and
milk bar on stratford rd.

I left Haslucks Green school in 52 and started at the X until 56. remember
all the above teachers plus Miss Machen who if I remember right took us for
maths. such a pity that the school was pulled down, it was well built in
fact very well built by todays standards, the playing fields were excellent,
also great for sports days, but that amount of land was probably the schools
downfall, ripe for development. does anyone remember the circus paying its
annual visit plus the carnival, what a day that used to be, from early
morning watching the floats parade along the stratford road until last thing
at night, the firework display, and it always seemed to be a lovely sunny
day. My late uncle attended the boys school John Peter Wilkes think he may
have left in 44 or 45. He did His National Service in Germany as a despatch
rider, had a passion for motor bikes and was in a local motorbike club for
most of his adult life.
Seeing the photo of the girls wearing the school skirts brought back
memories, we made a school pump bag to start with then a domestic science
apron plus the skirt. Does anyone remember the annual making of a christmas
cake, taking in all the ingredients.
It was a good school which equiped one with a broad set of life skills. love
to hear from anyone who has the same happy memories. I left Shirley in 1985
and have lived in Warwick since that time, visit family and friends
regularly, sorry that the village has now disappeared. Why Oh Why did they
pull the Odeon down. every gap of land has been built on. I remember a
lovely cottage opposite the police station that had petrol pumps, the lady
of the house would sit outside her front door that was surrounded with roses
doing Her knitting. Happy days and so many of them.
Ann
Sly (nee Marshall)
Left the cross 1958 ish, cant remember many of the teachers names, but will

I was at Sharmans Cross girls until 1955 remembering Janet Haw? June Smith,
June Sturmey, Patricia Roberts, Jean Mobley.
Live in Arbury Hall Road on the Cranmore Estate. The head mistress Miss
Jones left to marry a Bishop at the end of the school year in July too.
English teacher was Mrs. Back. Music teacher Mr Cressick I think it is spelt
used to stir his tea with a pencil, sat on the back of the chair with to
play the up-right piano. Two rows of pre-fab classrooms the other side of
the playground. Gym and Dancing were performed in the upstairs hall as was
assembles and dinner was served. The boys used to watch from below as we
changed just to see if the could-see anything.
Worked at Carrington Newsagents at week-ends while still at school then
after for twelve months. Then trained in grocery and commodities for the
Co-op on the Stratford Road before doing exports at Deloro Stelite. Married
in 1960 emigrated to Australia with three children in 1968 and live in
Rockingham south of Perth in Western Australia to this day. Anyone wanting
to contact me to reminese on our school days welcome.
Joyce C Southall-Mills
I left Sharmans Cross High around 1957, remember Miss Rudge, also getting
changed for P.E. and the boys watching us. I was in Greswold House, names
that I can recall are Elizabeth Parker, Dian Munroe. Brenda? There was a boy
Albert that I went out with for a while.
Megan (Packman) Mountford
I can remember when I was there at school from 1955 - 1960. I can
recall some of the teachers; Mr Hicks, Coe, Adams, Aston, Cress, Slimm,
Rudge, Berry. I can remember when I first went there and we were in
the annex adjacent to the Post Office. The Headmaster was a Mr York
and Mr Bain all those years ago. Where has time gone? I well
remember a lad at school older than myself who always had copies of an
American magazine called Hot Rod and have often wondered if this lad went to
the States or stayed in the UK and if he still maintained an interest in the
automotive world. I am submitting a photo of the class I was in with
Mr Aston the Form Teacher.

I attended Haslucks Green Junior School from 1949-1955. Spent most of my
childhood in and around Shirley. I still go back to visit my old haunting
grounds and love trips down memory lane. I lived in Berkeley Road there were
many children in the road we had our own football team and played other
teams all around the Shirley area we were very hard to beat. My first
girlfriend was named Pamela she lived in Hurdis road and I used to buy her
2oz of pear drops to give to her at school. My second girlfriend her name
was Jeanette and she lived at the bottom of the same road I lived in. I have
fond memories of both.
I live in North Wales now and have done for the past 26years with no regrets
it is a beautiful part of the world but still love Shirley and it's
surrounding areas.
My senior school was Sharmans Cross and on a recent visit found to my horror
both the Girls and the Boys schools were now housing estates. I represent
the school in Cross country, Athletics and Rugby I held the school record
for the 880yards won my school laurels and won the year school prize for RK
(religous knowledge) in my 3rd year.
On seeing the housing estates instead of the schools it felt and still feels
as though they have wiped out all my school days and memories it made my
stomach churn I am left gutted. I know life has to move on but on my last
visit it was a 6th Form College. Representing the House of Greswolde (Green)
only two of us held school records in our House, myself the 880 and my class
mate Roger Wothers the 220yards.
This was also the time of the Christine Keeler affair and her friend Mandy
Rice Davis attended the girls school and was going out with a boy in our
class. So the memories are interesting and adventurous now it is all gone.
To my Form Masters Mr Crees,Mr Rudge, Mr Buglass who did so much for me
Thank You. Also thanks to a Mrs Lloyd at my Junior School.
I have continued to play sport all my life but had to retire from a
favourite, Squash playing in the County Leagues at the age of 58 due to a
hip replacement.
They used to have a fair every year on the corner of Haslucks Green and
Stratford Road then they built the GECB which now in ruins.
Across the road were the Warwickshire Barracks were I attended Sea Cadets TS
Gamecock.
Along the Stratford road to the Border of Hall Green and Shirley where the
37 Bus terminated I learnt to Ballroom Dance at the Nest Dance school and
the dentist (Mr Wolfson) was a few doors up, opposite the Midland Counties
Dairy's
"Shirley is a lovely Town but was a beautiful Village". Thank You.

the same class. In addition, Gill Cooke, Susan Hanley, Mavis Burman Ann
Squires and Brian Middleton. Teachers, Mr Lawson [very strict], Mr Walters
[a bit dopey] I went back for a visit a few years ago, Very weird. Still
smelt of school dinners but the quad looked so small! Seemed immense at the
time. I got my first 'break' singing in St James church and I've been
singing ever since.
Elizabeth Nye {Walker}
My sister and I Beverly and Bernice Hughes attended Haslucks Green School
from 1944? thru 1949 then on to Sharmans Cross Secondary Modern School from
1949 to 1953. We then moved to Canada with our parents. We both
went back to visit in 1959 and haven't been back since. But I do miss dear
old England. The Head Mistress was Ms. Jones. I remember a teacher, Miss
Whetham who then married. Her married name was Hughes (no relation to
us). Girl friends were: Joan Andrews, Pearl Oldry, Hilary Thompkins,
Pauline Slater. I remember an Ann and John Smith (twins), Beryl Chamberlin
and many more.
We were in the Odingsels House which wore red ties and sashes. I also
remember the girls were upstairs and the boys downstairs. At play time there
would be groups of girls passing notes to the boys and vice versa. I
remember having a crush on David Green. I don't think he ever knew.
I have lots of happy memories. One is riding to school through Shirley
Park on my bike. Going to the Odeon Theatre on Saturday mornings and buying
penny candy on the way. We lived at 3 Dunard Road, Shirley. Would love to
hear from anyone that remembers us. Or not. Just anyone who went to Sharmans
Cross in the early 50's.

gardens.I also went to Sharmans Cross School. I had no idea they had a
reunion for our era, I would have attended. I hope you read this
and look forward to hearing from you.
Pat Collett (nee Hoare)
I went to Sharmans Cross School from 1940 to 1945. I left a message on
the school web site but that seems to have disappeared. I attended and
presented the prizes at the annual event back in the '80s. Any reunions
coming up and you would like a little chat about the school during the
war years just let me know. Kind regards
Mike Parr MBE
Attended 1944-1948. Lived in Shakespeare Rd. Recently attended
local reunion but was disappointed as no-one there was from my year.
Does anyone remember me?
Maurice

Wow, I just loved reading what
everyone had written here and am so glad that my newphew sent me the
website. I went to Sharmans Cross from 1945 to 1949 and have been trying
for quite a while now to find anyone that I might remember or who would
remember me. Some of the teachers that come to mind are Ms Whitworth,
PE teacher, Ms Spencer, Domestic Science, Ms James, English and Ms Dora
Jones, the headmistress. Can't remember all of the teachers names, but
put it down to old age, at least, that's my excuse. Yes, I used to go
to the Odean theatre on Saturday mornings too. My two brothers went to
Sharmans Cross, and some of you here might recognize their names,
Raymond Foley and Barry Foley, also my sister, Maureen Foley went
there. So, anyone here remember any of us? I would love to find some
of the people that lived around me in Avon Road, Cranmore Road, and
Arbury Hall Road. I live in the USA and have done so for many years,
so I never get to see anyone unfortunately, just when I come to Solihull
to visit my sister. I would love to hear from anyone here, so please
feel free to get in touch.
ps. I have attached a picture of
myself and schoolgirls at Sharmans Cross High School taken around 1948
or thereabouts. If any of the girls on this would like to get in touch
with me, if they recognize themselves or anyone else whose name they
remember. I am second from the left standing in the back row and my
name was Marlene Foley at that time. It would be lovely to be in touch
with any of them.

Just found this site
fantastic!!. I went to Sharmans Cross se. from June 1948 form 2b for a
few weeks, then 3b, and 4b leaving in July 1950. I lived in Solihull,
Drury lane. Teachers included Mr Adams, Tech Drawing, Mr Baines, maths
ug. ug. Mr Scott science, Mr Blewit, woodwork, Mr Davis ,english and
good old Mr Watts our form master 3 and 4b, plus his famous slipper.
Does anyone remember Sonie Lock who I used to sit next to, his Dad kept
the paper shop in Mill lane Solihull. Alan Tidy, great footballer. Barry
Wharton who painted the sea-scape covering the whole length of one wall
in the assembley hall. Roger Drury who was very fast over the 100 and
200 yds. no one to touch him. Mike Gillam the school's head boy. Mike
Smith a wizard at music. Paddy Holt. I remember playing for the school
cricket team against Solihull grammer school and beating them, at the
school assembly the next morning the victory was mentioned, I thought we
had won the world cup.
Another highlight potato picking and getting paid for it plus the money
from the paper round I thought I was a millionaire. Hope this may have
triggered a few memories for someone, thanks again for the site

I went to Sharmans Cross school when it was in Sharmans Cross Road, I
left in 1950. Headmistress Miss Jones. Is there anyone out there from
this era, if so I would like to hear from you.
Patricia Hoare
I left Haslucks Green Rd School in 1942 and graduated(?) from Sharmans
Cross Boys School in 1945. During that time Mr. Adams was the art teacher and Mr. Bains, I
believe, taught maths or science. Our headmaster, Mr. Orrit, alias Mr. 'Orrid, once gave
me one on each hand with a cane for sitting on a radiator, oh for the good old days!
The school was divided into four 'houses' named, as I recall, Archer, Greswolde,
Odingsells and Hawser, but they may have been spelled differently, my 70 year old memory
isn't what it was. I played a harmonica in a talent contest one Saturday morning about
1943/4 at the Odeon, Shirley. I'd love to hear from anyone who may remember me.
George Allso
Hi George,
Although your name doesn't ring a bell, we must have been there about the
same time. Do you remember Mr Horsman-Woodwork, Mrs Gardener-English, Mr
Peppit-Gardening, Miss Harmer-Biology, not to mention Miss Gregory from the
Ronda Valley and Miss College, and Mr Parker-PT. I too suffered a whacking
from Mr Orrit for going home at lunchtime without permission. Saturday
morning at the Odeon was great (I don't remember what happened to my Micky
Mouse badge!) I lived in Stanway Rd near the big island with the static
water tank. I eventually went to Bordesley Green Tech and then into
the RAF as an apprentice, and did 28 years. Now live in Inverness.

I went to both Sharman's Cross junior and later senior school. I was in
Greswold house, and left school in 1942.Ilived in Arnold Rd Shirley. My
School pals where Geoff Shaw, Wilf Reeves, Alec Franklin, Betty Tonks,
Wenda Key, we used to ride our bikes to the Lido swimming pool in the
summer months, I cant just recall where that was exactly at, but we used
to head off down Olton Rd, it was quite a ride. I can remember sat
morning at the Odeon, and bike trips to Stratford on Avon, which meant
ice cream at Henley in Arden. I had an older brother John, we both
worked at Sam James bicycle shop next to the Plume of Feathers hotel in
Shirley, we worked there until we both enlisted in the Navy. Does any
one remember.
Tony Bebb
I left Sharmans Cross School in May, 1940, and moved with my parents to
Nottinghamshire. He once caned me for winding my watch whilst he was
talking to class, - I didn't even realise I was doing it! I remember
with affection Mr. Guest, (science) He helped give me a lifelong
interest in electronics. He also did not like talking in class. He could
write on the blackboard and at the same time see the reflection of the
class in the glass doors of a strategically placed cupboard. If a boy
leaned toward another, Mr. Guest would yell "BOY" and hurl the wooden
eraser. Woe betide anyone who had not learned to duck! I believe he
joined one of the armed services and was killed.

My best friend was Gordon White and his father had a big grocery shop at
Olton and we cycled to school in 1938 before joining Bordesley Green
Junior Technical School. I had a school bike a Hercules, Gordon had a
posh private bike. We were happy till the war started in 1939 and were
evacuated to Stratford on Avon. I am now retired after 43 years with the
Yorkshire Electricity Board as an Electrical Power Engineer on systems
up to 132KV but keep in touch with the Solihull Area. Love to hear from my old friends .
