The Italian restaurant at the old royal oak, has now been replaced with an Indian-Spice Rooms. Menu choice was good with interesting 'Specials' Food was very good, although on the downside portions on the small size, prices about average for this type of restaurant. The Pub is small and cosy, having only one bar, mainly locals. Bar staff very pleasant and attentive. Would recommend you try it out.

OK been for my meal. It's a Tuesday night and I wouldn't expect the place to be heaving and it wasn't!
We ordered our food and were well looked after by the waitress, a very pleasant and polite youngster.
The wait was encouraging - chances are if the place is not busy and you are waiting, it means they are actually cooking your food fresh in the kitchen!  Food arrived, must say presentation was not overly impressive. Think of decent plain home cooking and you're about there. So not really expecting too much, I started on my meal.
Happily I was hungry and inclined to overcome the visual limitations and concentrate on the simple quality of the food itself.
Well the good news is your eyes can be deceived! I had ordered a fillet steak, it was in a creamy mushroom based sauce. Some might say not overly ambitious, but I am more interested in simple quality than fancy chef's touches.
Take the food for what it is, and enjoy the fact that someone who cares about honest and simple quality food has actually cooked it for you and you will enjoy your meal. I did.

The Oak has changed hands since the comments below were written.  I have been going there on and off since Brenda's days (those who know will know!) And therefore have seen a few changes in the old place. The current incumbents have tried really hard to tidy the place up and from what I can see have done a great job!  I am booked in for a meal in the restaurant "La Romantica" tonight, so I will post a review soon.

Indeed, Karen, I have tried the Saxon, although I have to admit, purely out of convenience, when I was living in Earlswood. I would have to totally concur with your comments, namely awful food and poorly trained staff.

Neville Mundy talking of really bad pubs and bad management. Have you experienced the Saxon in Cheswick Green? Now this really is a bad example of a public house!

What a great new look for the oak 10/10 for the refurb good food and good beer all at a price you can afford. The old royal oak has a great little restaurant on its side cooking great value meals try the lamb shank in red wine or the steak and Guinness pie.

The Bistro is decent and offers well good tuck, Its a village pub and that's how it should stay what do you expect to walk into in a remote village! Liquid refreshments all round!!

Well its a Greene King pub and they have a good reputation. Its ok. I have been to worse and I have been to better. Its horses for courses at the end of the day.

Perhaps my earlier comments have been misunderstood. Although I intimated that the establishment was ripe for refurbishment, the last thing I would wish to see is another example of a sanitised, brewery-owned 'theme' pub. The Old Royal Oak... Good beer? Perhaps. Good food? Well, that depends on whether you equate quality with an abundance of fries (or should that be chips?!), unimaginative salad 'garnishes' (remember the 70's and 80's?!) and an uninspiring array of cholesterol-laden deserts. If you want a drink in a semi-characterful 'local', then try the Old Royal Oak; if however you can differentiate good food from mediocre, then go to the likes of The Malt Shovel (Barston), The Boot (Lapworth) and The Crabmill (Preston Bagot).

I the 10 months the pub has been open this time its come on leaps and bounds so fair play to Rob and his staff for a job well done.

I disagree with Neville Mundy. To many of our pubs nowadays are just the same where ever you go. It made a refreshing change to find a pub just being a pub, serving good beer and good food and not trying to be something its not, a chain!!

Tired, run-down and ripe for refurbishment. A total waste of potential.
How about it Paul Salisbury?

After a long walk from the village green to the station,  a welcome site if you have 20 minutes to kill before your train. A recommendation for the staff and quality of products. 10/10 all round.

Yes I have to agree with what has been said.

I HAVE VISITED THE OLD ROYAL OAK SEVERAL TIMES AND EVERY TIME THE FOOD HAS BEEN SUPERB ALONG WITH THE QUALITY SERVICE.
