1970's

My mum - Janet Brown was at HC late 60s early 70s.I am trying to find out what happened to her best friend Barbara Wainwright (changed to Barbara Armitage).  She had a brother called Stehan. They kept in touch for years but then Barbara stopped contact suddenly.  My mum is desperate to find out what happened to her.
Emma Crouch

I attended HC with Jill Preece, Pam Bagnall and Lorraine Stilling. I remember Gill Sansome, Denise Mole, Janina Trebacyzk (I am sure that's not right - sorry) , Jane Gardner. Elaine Bennet, I wonder what happened to you all? I met Mrs Brocket recently (needlework) she is really a very nice lady!  I also remember Mrs Merryweather, Mrs Willis and Mrs Ball. HC was not a good experience for me although I had good friends. I still live in Solihull, I have 2 children 17 and 19. I am a lecturer in Early Childhood studies at Solihull College.
Helen Thatcher

Is there any girl who remembers me Dave Bent. I used to go out with a pretty girl called Lynne Tuppeny (frappy frappy). I remember Dawn France, Fiona, Sheila, Kathy. Write me a few lines about the past and present. I was also known as freshness.
Dave Bent

I attended Harold Cartwright Grammar School/Alderbrook School from 1972-1977, then Solihull VIth Form College and Solihull Tech. Would like to hear from anyone who was there around the same time. My first form teacher was Miss Halsall, later she became Mrs Meager I think. Then I was in 2RO, 3D, 4D etc I think...It's all getting a bit hazy...I still live around 20 mins from Solihull area.
Bev Minett

I attended Harold Cartwright/Alderbrook 1970-75. Mr Jefferson (Science) took us in 1st year and through the haze I can remember Mrs Merryweather (Maths) and Mr Hale who left to be a local politician.  Would love to hear from anyone in that period.
Bernadette Connolly

I went to Harold Cartwright from 1968-1972 after leaving Ulverley Junior School in Sheldon. I remember a few names from the past, Denise Mole, Janet Brereton, Sue Thompson, as well as Janina and Wendy. Have no photos from school days so would love to get copies if anyone remembers me from those days. Today I live in New Zealand with my husband and 3 grown up children and I work as a staff nurse in a local hospital.
Julie Hambley

I went to Valley Road school 1960-1963, Hatchford Brook junior from 1963-1967 and Harold Cartwright from 1967-1971 until I moved to Sunderland. I would like anyone who was at these schools at the same time as me to get in touch. I remember teachers Miss Parker, Mrs Hennell, Mrs Jones and Mr Rillie at Hatchford Brook.
Alison Walters

I went to H.C. from 1966-1970. My teachers were Miss Davies, (Biology) Mr. Shreives, (chemistry) Mr. Steele, (maths) Miss Newman (French) Mr. Dutton, (Physics) Mr. Beale, (music)  Mr. Dickson (History). Miss Ball was the second in command, and Mrs. Willis was the Head Teacher. I want to apologise to every one of you for my behaviour in those days! I shudder when I think about what I put you all through! For your interest I became a dental nurse, emigrated to Canada, got married and now have four children and am doing home day care. If any one remembers me I would love you to email!

1960's

I attended Harold Malley between 1961-65. The school seems to have disappeared. Was it swallowed by Tudor Grange? I moved to London in 1965 and have lived in several countries since. My home is now in Washington DC.
Nick Simmonds

Was it the good old days?   1964-1971. 7 years in one school with the dreadful purple - no I still can't wear purple even 35years later!!!
I can remember faces but not names.  Anyone remember Solihull Young Volunteers?  I remember discos at all the local schools and the civic hall, also methodist church hall near the swimming pool.  Have tried to find people on Friends reunited - will try with the "new" school name. Now live on a smallholding in Shropshire, never very rich, never very poor but a lovely place to live any time of year.
Jan Herraty

I was at HC from 1966-1970. My family belonged to a religious cult, and I had a hard time at school because I was so different from everyone else. I behaved like an idiot for four years, and was glad to leave in 1970.  Now, I have married a Canadian, and live near Toronto, Canada, have four grown up children, but still think from time to time of my teen life in Solihull.
Yes, I remember Mrs. Willis, Miss Ball. the maths teacher - Mr. S? can't remember his full name, The chemistry teacher, also a Mr. S. Mr. Beale, Miss Davies (biology), and an English teacher who was so amazing some days, and so awful the next (PMS?), Mr. Dutton, our history teacher, I forget his name, and yes, PE in our uniform grey underwear and T-shirts! Remember those showers?!  Please email me if you remember any of this,

Found this site whilst looking for info. re: The Applejacks as Alan Herbertson has contacted me on the Friends Reunited site, & we have been reminiscing about the early '60's when we both attended the early years of Harold Cartwright, and all the excitement when this group made the charts (they were forgiven for attending Tudor Grange!!)  I used to arrive for school by train from Lapworth, congregate ( catching up with all the gossip!) on Solihull station before all making our way up Blossomfield Road.   Pauline R. & Eileen B. you really made me laugh with your memories SO accurate!  Eileen, I was in the choir, you have jogged my memory re: 'Hallelujah Chorus' yes it certainly took a lot of rehearsing!  I believe I joined in the middle of a year 61/62 ?( could someone refresh my memory please) & the oldest forms as it was a new school ( I was even made a prefect in my second year! no one more suprised than me! ) I do have happy memories of the school especially as my home life was rather 'erratic', hence me arriving & then leaving just as suddenly!!! in 63/64 I think?  I was made welcome despite my name! ( Penelope to the teachers!) and that I had relocated from 'down South' - Hampshire.  Heather Bond & Christine Tudor were friends I remember well.  Does anybody else remember me?  Thank you anyway to all of you.   I now live near Chichester. Penny Perfect

I went to school 1968. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. Joanna Preece was my best friend but can't remember anyone else!!
Judy Toothill (Stockdale)

Does anybody out there know the whereabouts of Ted and Beryl Evans, they lived in Daylesford Road in the late 1960's and had twins Paul and Mandy and a daughter Suzanne. They moved to Tamworth and then lost touch with my Mom. I would be most grateful to receive any information about them.
Lynne Jones

I joined Harold Cartwright in its first year...maiden name: Eileen Bragg.  I was in 1GM, Miss Coon's class...she came from Cornwall and taught us French . In my class were Linda Boydell, Linda Ball, Susan Waldron, Pat Melhuish (those two being inseparable!) Linda Cardell, little red haired Janice. etc Other friends: Janet Lyle (Head girl in 67/68 to my Deputy) Janet Shorthouse, Sylvia Allen, Anne Wetton, Lynne Peck, Hazel Turk, Chris Norman and Chris Peat.. Sue Delingpole....and many more!
I remember Mr Collins the Head of the two schools until we separated and Mrs Willis took his place as our Head. Lads in my year...Robert Austin (Oz), Mike Smythe, Ian Peeden (Pedro). Other teachers that come to mind : Miss Ball, Mr Stokes (I can still remember him making me produce my Log book and look up stuff  while I was in the corridor!! I hated maths and still do!) Mr Cunningham,. science.. Mr Spiller,. physics.. Mr Radcliff,. history.. Mr Collard,. RE.. Mr Price...a most excellent music teacher...how we memorised all the words of "The Hallelujah Chorus" etc for the concerts at the Civic Hall! Mr Green for PE, Mr Barratt for maths who could throw chalk with a deadly aim!
The purple uniform and the dreadful lilac gym rompers. Being goal keeper for the Hockey Team who were almost unbeaten giving me little to do in goal except chat up their boyfriends!  Mr England (if you read this.. I live right by an escarpment now!) Mrs England.. Miss Beaumont who became Mrs Bird.. teaching us cookery...the horror of having to cook for the staff and entertain them in the "flat" at the back of the cookery room. Mrs McMurtery who taught needlework...the first thing we made was an apron for cookery.
The 6th form uniform...lovatt green straight skirt and jerkin top...not at all flattering especially if you were fat like me.
Mr Flemons who taught me A level History of Art ..I have never forgotten that "Ucello painted horses red"!!! Mrs Booth and Miss Dennison, Mrs Moran who taught English (I never did read "Emma" all the way through.)  The trips to Switzerland and nearer to Ludlow.  Gazing at Martyn Adams playing rugby when I should have been concentrating....!  Great days...but I still don't wear purple...not even as an "old lady"!!!!
Eileen Bragg

Hi Peter fuller, I went to HC from Jan 64 until the split and left HM in summer '66 after A levels. I remember it as a strange time. Ray Stokes I remember well, a genuinely nice man who fostered a love of mathematics in me. Also, Cyril Deitch, had him for one year of A level Biology, then he left. Something of a sadist I think. Also Gil Cleeton in physics was good. i live in Florida now and have for about 25 years. I used to run around with Carole Mowbray from the girl's side and ??Maxwell et al from the boys side. I have more memories but space here seems to be limited.
Andy Clark

Hello I went to H Cartwright 65-70. I remember Mrs Majid French Miss Gilkes, Mr Fleming, Mr Beale, Mrs brocket, Mrs Moran Physics teacher escapes me but remember wanting to escape he scared me. My mates were Kathleen Flynn, Carol Frazier, Judith Smith, Pauline Wright, Lyn Russell, Wendy Williams, Lois Deaves, Janice Chapman list goes on.  I have very clear picture of sitting round by the wall overlooking Harold Malley.  I was mad about Tim Newman he had a twin Rafe. I used to get so excited if he was on the 176 bus going down Cov Road.  I knew he loved me cos when I got on the bus with my wicker cookery basket he'd want the rock hard cheese scone that the birds wouldn't touch but worked fine as a door stop. I remember hanging round the bike sheds to get water thrown on me by Tim and gang (and people say they don't know what love is).  The walks down Blossomfield Road were epic.  Take hat off outside gate squash it into satchel hitch skirt up and wait for the whistles (we hoped anyway).  One of the messages on the boy's chats mentions mountain centre in Wales. Remember it well.  Red phone box black phone four old pence press button A.  I moved to Whitby in North Yorkshire 7 years ago.  It's beautiful.  Hasn't got the Solihull postcode but have established a life here that could never be found in Solihull.  The countryside is amazing. Whitby is magical. Though sadly my husband who wanted to move here has multiple sclerosis and is now in a nursing home.  Took me 48 years to leave Brum don't go back.  Love to hear from anyone that knows me.
Pauline Rhodes

I left Harold Cartwright when my parents moved to Kent the year that HMS Pinafore was produced (1967?)- I should have been in it but was not allowed to stay until it was over. I remember Mr Shrieve and his board rubber, Miss Inkpen (games), Miss Dennis? (English/Drama). Janet Heaton and Jean Gosling were in my year.
Janet Gregory (now Jan Gray)

Hello Linda (Crutchley ) - I remember you from school-I did French art and biology A level which was a heck of a mixture. I remember you were very interested in history and how you came rushing out into the playground to tell us that Kennedy had been shot. I went to Loughborough Art College  and met my future husband  there. I have been living in Finland for 32 yrs. and we have 2 grownup sons and 1 granddaughter. Do write-I think your e-mail address is wrong. Would also like to hear from anyone else who went to HC school-has it got a new name now as it not on Solihull's school. list ?
Jacky Gray (now Jaatinen)

I attended Hatchford Brook primary school in the 1950's then went to Lode Heath Grammar while they were building the schools Harold Cartwright and Harold Malley. I left Harold Cartwight in June 1965 to come to Australia.
I was in form 5 (abysmal GCE O level year). Maiden name Crutchley, anybody remember or have any news of students. Teachers I remember Mr Stokes (Maths), Miss Ball (Geography and French). The school appears to have disappeared as well. I am now living in Canberra, Australia. Grateful for any news
Linda Argall

I went to Harold Malley School in 1963, when the first year was spent in Harold Cartwright School whilst our school was being finished. Is there anyone out there that remembers this time.  Although I left Solihull for Stockport in 1969 and have not been back I have fond memories of my school days and my youth around Shirley.
Peter Fuller
