TANWORTH IN ARDEN: An Introduction to the History of the Ancient Parish
Published by Brewin Books of Studley
For those who have always regarded Tanworth-in-Arden as being just a
beautiful village in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside, this
book will be a revelation.
The ancient parish of Tanworth is much more extensive, extending from
Shirley Heath in the north to the bottom of Liveridge Hill in the south;
from Fulford Heath in the west to Hockley Heath in the east. Besides
Tanworth village, it includes much of what is modern Monkspath; and the
villages of Cheswick Green, Dickens Heath, Earlswood, Hockley Heath and
Illshaw Heath.
This book will throw light upon the following and many more aspects of
the history of the parish.
On Sale in Solihull at W.H.Smiths, Waterstones and Books Etc. Also at
W.H.Smiths at Redditch. Or from the Author at 46 Coppice Walk, Cheswick

Wonderful what you can find. I attended Tanworth
Junior and Infants School '63-'68 and have very fond memories
of both people and life at that time. School Caps, Grey
Shorts, Green Blazers, Walking in Pairs hand in hand to the
village hall for school dinners (Which were great, concrete
and custard, roast lamb and mint sauce, and who can forget the
treacle sponge pudding) Sneaking into the shop to get a Jubli
(Triangular Ice Block) on the way. Walking (Running) to the
rec with encouragement from Mr Jones the new PE teacher.
Picking the damsons from the school orchard, Massive Slides in
the winter in the playground down the hill to the toilet block
(Before the new classrooms were added) The Church fete,
smashing the crockery (I wonder how many antique plates,
teapots cups and saucers we destroyed). My memory of
classmates, Alan Elliott, Keith Tilsley, Paul Phillips, Robert
Truslove, Colin Jordan, Clair Pobgee. Debbie Turner, Pamela
Dixon, Julie Kithener, Beverly Wainwright, Robin Horton, Mark
Robinson, Brian Daivies, Neil Lobb, Jane Mosely, Kevin
Houghton, Jennifer Cox, to mention but a few. Older classed
wer John Clifford, Lou Griffin, Phil Dripple, John Summers,
Keith Lobb, Miss Barrower was I think my first teacher, but I
remember Miss Bland, Mrs McArthur, and of course the wonderful
Mrs David. Mrs Shoebridge. My uncle is John Wheeler who for
many years called the Bingo in the Village Hall and and with
my Aunt Meg set up the "Old Folks Club" and My Father, Buck
(Albert) Walker was the Scoutmaster. I remember the church
parades as a Cub Scout, My mother assisted the cubs and I
think was Baloo. My Grandfather Alec Astley sparred with Jack
Hood in a shed behind the Bell.
I have tried to contact a Steve Mason who left a post trying
to find John Wheeler, If anyone knows of his or his wife
Kathleen's whereabouts, please let me know. Anyone who
remembers me, my cousins Timothy and Andrew Wheeler or Meg and
John Wheeler who are now living in Warwick please get it
touch. I now live in New Zealand but get back every couple of
years to see family and friends. My mother and father Jean and
Buck (Albert) also live in Warwick.

The village fete was a popular part of the local community although
sadly it has not taken place for quite a few years. A local
group are looking to organise one for the Summer of 2011 and
would very much appreciate local support - you can find out

I found the book very interesting. In the late 60s and 70s I very
often went from Hall Green into the area, found the odd
approach very interesting, almost like a castle on a hill. The
book was bought to see if there was anything on the tramway at
Tanworth-in-Arden.

I can supply a partial Brumbill family tree back to the early
19th century. The parents of Harry (Richard Henry to give him
his Sunday name) and May Brumbill were Manasseh Brumbill and
his wife Lucy, nee Lancaster. Harry and May had a sister
called Lucy Maud Brumbill who was married to Arthur C Morris.
I'm connected to this family through the Lancasters, another
old Solihull family, and I can supply a family tree for them
back to the 1640s.

In reply to the queries of Brian Brumbill and Paulette Morris,
when I came to live in Tanworth in 1970, Harry Brumbill was
still living in the cottage in Bates Lane. He was born in
Knowle in 1892, and moved to Tanworth four years later. He
attended the village school, leaving at the age of 13 to work
on the railway. Later he worked for Reynold's Tubes, retiring
after 25, years in 1957. His sister, May Brumbill, had lived
with him in the cottage until the 1920's, when she married Len
Holton. I know nothing more about her, and I have no knowledge
of Lucy Brumbill,- she might possibly be Harry's and May's
mother. Harry lived alone until he died at the age of 94, in
1986, still in the same cottage with no water, no electricity
and no sewerage. It has since been modernised, but not too
much.
May I recommend a book, 'The Tanworth Tales,- a Social Study
of Tanworth in Arden' - written by Joan McKenzie. Joan lives
opposite Brumbill Cottage, and knew Harry well. A chapter in
the book is devoted to him, but I have found no reference to
Arthur Morris.

would like to say hi to everyone I knew when I lived in
Bellfield from the age of two to sixteen. Daughter of Sally
and Sydney and have lived in Buckinghamshire for the last
twenty seven years. Married to Dave with a daughter and son
and and eight month old grandaughter.
Suzie has mentioned her memories with regards to the time she
spent living at Arden Wych with the Aston family. They
actually had four children. Elisabeth, my god mother who had
one son , Adrian, David had two sons, William and James,
Jennifer had three children, Alexander, Lucy and Miranda, and
finally Richard had three children, Mariola (who unfortunately
died at two years) Anthony and Ariadne. I am still in touch
with Elizabeth and Rosemarie who was David's first wife. Like

Oh thanks for the replies Paul and Phil! My surname then was Ashmore...
Suzie (Suzanne) Ashmore. My mums name was Clare, she was head
house keeper for the Astons and you jogged my memory about
Elizabeth and Jennifer! My friend Julie lived in the Ivy Store
shop, mum used to bring her to Arden Wych to play after school
sometimes. I just can't remember her surname. Paul was it your
mum Sally that my mum used to get up to the house to help her?
If it is... then that revives good (childhood) memories for
me, Sally was a lovely lady from what I remember of her.
My memories of school are dim and distant I'm afraid but I do
remember we all once did a school play at the village hall. We
did a red indians number to music and I played the little
Indian Papoose. I had to hide in the wigwam while my Indian
mum and dad danced round the wigwam... I then had to jump out
and my only line in the whole play was "....And I'm the
little Indian Papoose..." I wonder if anyone remembers this
particular school play? It would have been mid 60's maybe. I
remember we had to wait in a corridor for makeup to be put on
us... then a long wait before we went on. I do remember being
very jealous that one of the older girls got to do the Dance
of the Sugar Plum fairy in a wonderful ballet costume. I cried
for weeks!!
My other memories are the 3 Golden Retrievers we had. Jess,
Jane and Sarah... I still have great pics of me and the dogs
in the grounds of the house in summer. Does anyone remember me
or can anyone tell me what happened to Julie, Mary and the
Astons? I know the house has since been sold a few times and
the gardeners cottage is now separate from Arden Wych. I also
note that the old field to the right of the house has been
separated from the main house and sold separately? There used
to be an old gentleman in the early 60's who was the gardener.
He smoked a pipe and always smelt of mint imperials. He grew
(amongst many things) goosberries and I ate them raw much to
his disapproval. I used to cause havoc in his potting shed by
moving everything around and hiding his pipe and matches. He
was replaced (possibly retired or expired?) by a woman with
severely short hair like a man's. She then lived in the
cottage. The Astons had a Rolls Royce and the Chauffeur was a
man called Mr Fish, h
e sometimes took me to school in it. (Felt real posh!) The
other car that Gladys had was a blue Ford Capri. She would
take me in it when she went to the plant nursery at Earlswood
most weeks. I was only 5 when Gladys gave me my first Pimms at
Richard Astons 21st. I got so drunk that Mr Fish had to catch
me when I fell off a chair. (Mum was busy in the kitchen and
Gladys had tipped the wink to the drinks waiter) "Get her a
Pimms young man... it's party time!" Winking at him as if to
say..."Use LEMONADE" He must have got it all wrong! Completely
inebriated at 5 years old. Mum wasn't pleased.
So many memories, sorry for the long ramble. I have old pics
of my time in the village... can someone let me know how to
upload them on here and I'll put them up. Thanks once again
Pail and Phil... let me know if you ever do another reunion!

Suzie. You are indeed correct in thinking the Astons were on Vicarage
Hill. I was 'best friends' with Paul Smith's brother Richard.
We organised a reunion in the Bell last year and met up with
some 'old' friends. I don't think I remember you, but I lived
down the hill in Mile End from 1951-1968.

Hi Suzie. Yes you are right. It was the Astons of Arden Wych, and of
course you are correct when you said it was vicarage hill. The
Astons had two daughters, Elizabeth, and the younger one
Jennifer. The Elliots were a lovely family, I went to school
with the youngest lad, and I believe my brother Richard was at
school with Gooffrey. When you said the village stores did you
mean Taylors at the top of Mile End, or the Ivy Stores next to
Bates Lane? Is your surname your married or maiden name. Have
spoken to my sister Carolyn but cant remember you. Good to
hear from you. Regards

Just read the post from Paul Smith in April 2005. He mentions visiting
the Astons in Johnsons Hill where his mother Sally was nanny
to the Aston children. If it's the Aston family I think it is,
then the Astons house was Arden Wych and it was Vicarage Hill
not Johnsons Hill. If it the same family then I remember
Sally! I lived at Arden Wych from about 1963 to 1971/2. My mum
was housekeeper for the Aston family. The children were grown
up in the 60's. John and Gladys Aston had 3 children. David
(who himself had a small baby called Alexander), a daughter
(can't remember name) and Richard, who I remember had a
fantastic 21st birthday party in a marquee on the lawns in the
grounds of the house. I went to the village school and my
friends were Mary Elliot and Julie from the village shop.

I live on the very outskirts of Birmingham. I have recently adopted a
bird of prey, and I am now in the process of training the
bird, getting it to obey, and manning it to the glove. In the
next couple of weeks, the bird will be ready to get out and
desperate to stretch her wings properly and basically do what
birds of prey do in the wild.
If anybody has large spaces of land, or derelict fields then I
would be immensely grateful. I am not a poacher, and would
like to highlight that I am dead against and completely dont
agree with poaching and trespassing. I simply want to master
the art of falconry, but sadly without rural space, this will
be near impossible.
Hopefully someone knows of somebody. I look forward to hearing
from someone soon! Thanks!

THE MIKE HAILWOOD MEMORIAL RUN runs annually from the
closest Sunday in March to the day of the accident (21st March
1981)unless it clashes with Mothers Day then the next closest
Sunday is chosen. This year it will be on SUNDAY MARCH 21st
2010 and we are expecting a record number of riders to attend.
On the evening of March 21st 1981 Mike, David & Michelle
Hailwood were all involved in a tragic car accident at Portway,
near the family home in Tanworth in Arden. They were returning
from a fish and chip shop when Mike encountered a flat back
lorry that had turned across the carriageway of the A435
Birmingham to Redditch road. It was a wet, dark night and Mike
had no chance of avoiding the collision which instantly
claimed Michelle's life. Mike died two days later at the
Birmingham Accident Hospital on March 23rd. David Hailwood,
who was in the rear of the car, survived. Mike was just weeks
away from his 41st Birthday. Mike had returned from retirement
in New Zealand. After an amazing come back at the Isle of Man
TT races in 1978 & 1979, Mike had gone into partnership with
Rod Gould and set up a motorcycle shop in Tyburn Road,
Erdington, beside Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham.
After retiring Murray Walker said of Mike Hailwood, "In all my
years of passionately following motor sport, one man stands
out above everyone else in my affection and regard: Mike
Hailwood."
Of Mike's ability Murray Waker said;
"His versatility and skill were awe-inspiring. I've seen him
at the same meeting win races on a left foot gear change 125cc
two stroke, a right foot change 250cc twin, a 350cc single
cylinder four stroke and a four cylinder works MV. I've seen
him start at the back of the grid with an injured leg and a
pusher to get him going and still beat a field of top world
class riders. His fluid style was unmistakeable and supreme,
irrespective of whether it was wet or dry and he did it all
with nonchalant charm and modesty."
The Mike Hailwood Memorial Run is held every March from the
former Norton Works in Bracebridge Street, Aston, Birmingham.
To be close to the business Mike bought a house in the
beautiful village of Tanworth in Arden, on the outskirts of
Birmingham.

participate in the sport of Crown Green Bowls.
We still have a few members who lived in the village for many
years. The Mole, Shortley and Vines families still have a huge
input to the running of the club.
Anyone interested feel free to contact me.

My parents were caretakers of the Memorial Hall at
Hockley Heath and moved to 2 Knowlebury Cross in Tanworth in
Arden in 1951, when I was just 3 years old. It was an idyllic
village for a childhood, and there was a great community
spirit in those days.
The village school with Mrs Davies as Headmistress, Miss
Barter, Mr Evans and Jo Bland as teaching us at the time.
'Singing Together' sessions and the Church Choir and my stage
debut as Father Christmas in the School play at the village
hall.
During Summer holidays we would be out at Chapman's farm,
Danzey Green, helping with the harvesting and building up our
muscles. In the depths of winter we would skate on the ponds,
canals or even Earlswood Lakes when it froze over. We would
help deliver groceries from Taylor's shop on a farm tractor
and trailer when the village was snowed in.
My only connection with Nick Drake was that I used to take his
Father's car to Savilles of Stratford -upon-Avon where I
worked in the late 60's/early 70's for servicing and leave my
Mini Cooper S at the Drake's house. When I took up the guitar
I often used to roam over the field singing, playing to myself
and writing songs that I've never done anything with. I do
like to go to the Nick Drake events each year, and my Daughter
was married at the Church in June, with the reception at the
village hall.
Brother Phil and I were always entertaining friends in the one
room that we virtually took over in the house. Our parents
were very tolerant and we had a dart board on the wall, record
decks, amplifiers, guitars and tape recorders. Phil and I went
on to play in various bands over the years such as the Rockin'
Equasions (initially with Pete Fomula), Rebels, Solid State,
Muffin, The Soul Session Band (me only), Velvet Mist (Phil
only), etc.
I plan to write a book when I retire about growing up in the
village and playing in bands during the amazing 60's & 70's.
Anyone who would like to contribute their memories should get
in touch sometime.
Cheers
Roger Dipple
ps
Great idea about a reunion. I met Brian Taylor (Son of
one of the brothers who used to run the village shop) recently
who now lives at Rowington. How about if we hired the village
hall, got a band together and had a great reunion party for
all those that grew up in and love Tanworth in Arden? We could
do it for charity and raise some money for the Church
restoration fund. What do others think?

Tanworth holds some fond memories for me too having
lived in Bates Lane from 1956 until 1974. Have been in
communication with Rita Cox over the past month and if there
is a chance of a reunion I would certainly support it and help
as much as I could. Im presently living in Hall Green so
reasonably close to Tanworth if we need someone to run around

It was lovely to find this site. I am researching my family history and
my great great grandparents must have lived in this area after marrying
in circa 1814. Two of their children - David King was baptised in
Tanworth in 1820 and his sister Mary in 1817. Two of their siblings were
baptised in the Weslyan chapel Redditch (William 1814 and Caroline in
1824/5. My great great grandfather Francis King born 1795/6 Warwicks was
an agricultural labour so must worked at different farms in this area.
His wife Ann was ten years older than him and always on the census said
she was born in Worcestershire and on one of the early census stated
Theckenall (guess the enumerator misheard this) and i cannot find such a
place!! The family eventually moved to West Bromwich where my
greatgrandfather Enoch King was born in 1829 and his sister Eliza in
1825. They were baptised in West Bromwich Weslyan chapel. I will
try to visit Tanworth in Arden someday as it looks a wonderful place and
i would like to explore. I would appreciate some feedback from
these comments

I am very anxious to trace relatives or anyone who knew Pilot Officer
Alfred Eric DAVIES, an RAF Spitfire pilot, shot down near Hastings on 30
October 1940 and sadly killed. A road close to where he died is likely
to be named in his honour. The Davies family came from Tanworth in
Arden.

I think when you walk into this pub its the threshold between a village
into a town pub. This is a shame as its bringing the town into the
village, you walk in and already you get the impression that the target
is the richer side of the community and all the rich suited up townies.
Sorry but its the truth. This is not the pub I used to know and
certainly is not traditional!

Tanworth in Arden, the trees are awake.
Birds flutter, flying down to the lake.
The sound of a shot ,can be heard in the distance
as clays hit the air...the men stand and stare.
Aga's a blazing, heating up an old kitchen
Breakfasts are cooking, wellies are wet,
The Church bell starts to ring,
and the dog starts to sing.
Awaiting her walk, not quite ready yet.
Tanworth life,
such a wonderful thing
Not all gilt and gold,
There are plenty of memories,
still to be told.

From Adrian Booth of Bridlington in East Yorkshire: my wife Janet and
myself called at Tanworth on Saturday 23rd September, on our way back
home from a holiday in the Cotswolds. We were drawn by our great love of
the music of Nick Drake, and we had a lovely stroll around the village.
During our stay we talked with three residents, including a lovely lady
at the church, all of whom had known Nick all those years ago. Everyone
was so friendly. We had a look at the house where Nick used to live, and
we paid our respects at his simple gravestone in the churchyard. We
thought the village itself was lovely, although it was sad that the pub
has lost its character. If we are in the area again we will certainly
revisit the village. With best regards.

Finding this website was a bit of a revelation. I was born in Hockley
Heath but my parents moved to Tanworth in 1951 (i was 2 months old) I
have more memories of Tanworth than could ever fit in this space. The
comments from Paul Smith prompted me to put my comments in, his brother
Richard was an early mate, along with Keith Lobb, Rob Griffin, the lads
from the 'Bell' I guess I was a bit of a rebel in those early years,
fighting with Mrs David, the headmistress. Ridding motorbikes around the
'reck' and that was at the tender age of about 13... I was however a
Camponologist (can't even spell it now) at the church under the
watchful eye of Mr Corbett a local farmer from Danzey. My first love..
The beautiful Rita Cox came from Aspley Heath as did another good mate
Chris Hodgetts (They were neighbours.) I could ramble on for ever about
Tanworth, I loved living there. I do ride over on the odd Summer evening
on my motorbike and have a drink at the Bell. But you don't see any
faces you recognise these days... I did see Barbara Simmonds a few years
ago, she was a friend of my older sister June... That's another story...
Hello to all the old chums from Tanworth... Maybe we could arrange a
reunion sometime.

I came to know about Tanworth In Arden through my love of the
music of Nick Drake. In fact, so moved by his beautiful music and the myths
surrounding his life and tragic early death, I travelled up to Tanworth with
a friend about three years ago to see his grave. We stayed at Rushbrook
Farmhouse and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. There is
something deep and mysteriously beautiful about the village. I
think that the Nick Drake connection is what really does it
for me. It's almost as if his music has somehow seeped its way
into the very heart of the village and its old buildings. The
Pub was a little bit disappointing as it seemed to have been
turned into something of a modern and slick food
establishment. I should imagine that back in about 1970 it
would have had far more charm and personality. I would love to
be able to transport myself back in time and visit the village
at a time when Nick drake was still alive. It would be
interesting to savour the atmosphere and ponder whether or not
certain places within the village had been the inspiration for
some of his songs. Tanworth In Arden is the sort of place that
is as interesting and beautiful on a wet winters day as well
as a nice warm summers day. If I ever get rich I am going to
buy a little house in Tanworth and go there whenever I'm
stressed. I feel sure that after only an hour in the property
I will be feeling refreshed and ready to face the world again.

Hi my name is Paul Smith, i was privileged to of been born in the
village in Bellfield in December 1953.Ihave wonderful memories of my
childhood, playing ten a side football up the reck, taking my dog Simba down
the fields and loosing him in the stream tunnel under the railway line.
Going swimming at the Adies and visiting the Astons up Johnsons hill, where
my mother Sally was a nanny to the Aston children. Standing chatting in the
bar at the Bell with all the regs. {i am eighteen now!!!] Chatting to Jack
Hood who sat comfortably at the end of the bar with his whisky and his milk.
Watching Johnny Prescott training for his next fight and getting very
excited hearing Roger Moore was looking at a property at Wood End. My best
friend was Graham Summers, youngest son of the late Jack who owned the farm
at Danzey Green, sadly for me, Graham has emigrated to France to start a new
life in farming. (he is doing well) My hobby and still is now was standing
at the level crossing down the fields and capturing the sounds and smells of
any steam loco that came past. I left Tanworth in 1979 and my return trips
were with my brother Richard and our dad Sid sitting in the lounge having a
pint of Flowers ipa. I could go on, but i am just going to wallow in my
thoughts. Tanworth i loved you.

For Visitors to Tanworth in Arden the Church is open in the day for
prayer and a look around. The Church dates back to the 12th century with the
current structure built in the 14th century, alterations were made in the
18th century but the church was returned to the medieval pattern in the 19th
century. There is a modern 20th century addition of a toilet! A leaflet is
available in the Church entrance and explains the architectural history more
completely. For anyone researching their family tree please contact me and I

I have some information going back as far as Thomas (b1701 - d1772) &
Elizabeth Terry (d30.09.1757) who had the children Edward, Alice, William,
Sarah, James & Joseph. I have been informed that my Nan, whose name was
Elsie Hilda Terry (b14.12.1904 - d08.07.1971) was a descendent of Thomas
Terry but the Family Tree in between is missing! Elsie Terry was buried at

Tanworth’s Village Hall wins the lottery!
The village of Tanworth in Arden is celebrating a major grant towards
refurbishing its village hall. The good news came as the Tanworth Singers
were making the best of the cramped conditions in the hall to produce a
winning performance of “The Gondoliers”, Gilbert and Sullivan’s much loved

The Village Hall Trust has been awarded £69,830 by the Community Buildings
Trial Programme. The funds will be used to provide full access for disabled
people, improved toilets with baby changing facilities and improvements to
the stage and hall interior. The anticipated cost of the refurbishment will
be around £100,000
The 75-year- old village hall is the centre for a wide variety of
activities. The grant will enable facilities to be provided which match the
normal requirements of the 21st Century.
In addition to the Community Fund and much local fund raising by community
groups using the hall, the refurbishment is now possible thanks to further
support from other sources including Stratford on Avon District Council,
Tanworth Parish Council, the Tanworth Pantomime Committee and the Lottery
“Awards for All” fund.
The Chairman of the Village Hall Committee, Graham Medley, said: “We are
delighted that our efforts have been rewarded and the Village Hall can now
be modernised to ensure its continued use and expansion as a centre of
community activity. We have an ageing population and it is vitally important
that all people from the community can make use of the hall. The Hall is
already used for a range of arts based and social activities and it is hoped
that the improvements will encourage other community groups to be formed and
more young people to use the hall.”

Parish Church
Tanworth's parish church, St Mary of Magdelene, was built around 1330-1340.
It was damaged during the reformation and in the 1790's it was extensively altered to
conform to the then popular Palladium style. The vicar at the time was Philip Wren, the
great grandson of Christopher Wren designer of St Pauls Cathedral.
