Hi Everyone, I'm trying to find any historic images taken around
the Richmond Road area. I am particularly interested in the terraced houses
(Victorian Villas) - apparently they used to back onto a large park
'Richmond Park' in the the late 1800's.. I would like to know more about
them if anyone can help?

Olton Mere Sailing Club Olton Mere is a beautiful place right in the centre
of Olton. Many people do not realise that it is very easy to gain access to
the Mere if you just wish to enjoy this natural habitat. The Sailing Club
offers access permits for those who just wish to walk round the Mere. To
find out more look at www.oltonmere.org
where there are full details. Jonathan Berg" Unquote
Yes it is a beautiful place to walk but not at £38 per year and a fishing
permit is £127 per year - some of the best fishing lakes in the area are no
way near this permit price, Earlswood Lakes free to walk around and £3 per
day to fish, and yes it is about time the local council open it to the
general public , don't get me wrong i am prepared to pay to fish there but
not at these extortionate prices....

Hello, I was born in Olton in 1962 and left to go to the
University of Lancaster in 1982. I never returned, living in Manchester for
some twenty years and now sunny Madrid! While I doubt I will ever swap my
somewhat exotic habitat for the suburban quiet of Olton, I do look back ohn
my childhood years with fondness; I also return about once ot twice a year
to take stock and to visit family.
It is a lovely place to be brought up, although on my last stop I did notice
that the place had developed a lot of the ´´metropolitan blues´´ -
overcrowding, materialism, urban problems, crime etc.

What a wonderful website - does anyone remember the Gunn Nurseries? I
know my father, Stuart Gunn, grew up in Kineton Green Road, and believe
that his father [?John] ran the nurseries in the 1920/30s. I remember
staying with at his mother's [Beatrice] house in Kineton Green Rd, when I
was only 4 or 5 years old, by which time, we had moved out to Tanworth in
Arden. Any memories would be much appreciated.

I have just discovered this website and it brought back so many happy
memories. I lived in St. Bernard's Road from 1951-1960 when our garden ran
all the way down to the reservoir. My parents kept poultry and grew lots of
veg and fruit which were always in great demand. I went to St. Margaret's
and remember well Miss Gopsill, Mrs. Phillips and Mr. Bates. Some of the
classes were held in the Congregational Church Hall, some down in Olton
Hollow and others in the school itself.
Such memories,

I have just come across this site for the first time and found it
absolutely fascinating. My grandparents lived in Ulverley Green Road and my
parents and I lived on Warwick road for a time over the library (now
plumbase). My grandfather built the house and shops/flats himself, if
anyone remembers G H Jordan or has any old pictures I would love to hear
from you. My family moved to Olton from Earlswood in 1922 when my
grandfather bought some land and built a house in Ulverley Green Road and
some shops on the Warwick Road, one of the shop units became Olton Library.
We lived above the library until the early 1950's when we moved to Buryfield
Road, Solihull. My grand parents were called Jordan, we used to walk across
Ulverley Green Road to get the train into Birmaingham and we bought our
comics from a newsagent's shop under the bridge there. I remember the shops
up by the station, Wrensons, the chemist, a hair salon and Midland Bank. I
also remember going to the cinema in the hollow. Later on I went to Olton
Court Convent, this is a very evocative site ! I hve spent hours reading the
letters - I love it.

I recently bought an old photo of Olton Station, dated 1934. I'm
a little perplexed as there seems to be a sports pavilion and playing fields
where the Braemar road housing now is. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Does it have anything to do with St Margaret's school?

My mother lived in Olton from1926 to the early 50's and my grandparents
were there until 1970. My grandfather was a partner in the firm of Thomas
Pritchard -haulage contractors on Warwick road near Ulverly Terrace which
has probably vanished now. My mother knew Olton in the 20's.-and saw it
change. For more information e-mail

Hi dudes, I just discovered this web site as well. I've been living in
Olton Solihull for 15 years. Olton is pretty cool. NB: did you know that the
name Solihull comes from, 'SOILEY HILL', as there was a church on a hill and
when it was wet, you would get soil and mud on yourself, hence 'soiley hill'
or Solihull. Solihull has some serious history!

Hello Olton - I have just discovered this Web-site. I am intested
because I lived in Olton from 1936 to 1939 when my father worked in BSA,
Small Heath. We lived in Brookvale Road and I went to St Margaret's School
in Richmond Road and was in the choir of the church. I remember Miss
Gopsill and Miss Taylor very well and the head for part of the time anyway
was a Mr daniels. I also remember Mr Burrows. I think the Vicar was Rev
Scurry-jone but that mat not be correct. I have 2 photos of the pupils of
the School at that time. I love to hear from any one who might be
contemporary!

Dear Olton, I grew up in Olton when most of it was fields. Building was
stopped in 1938/9 because of the 2nd.W. War. This left half of Oban Road and
the bottom half of Braemar Road to be built in the late '40's. St.
Margaret's C of E School was in Richmond Road at the top of Braemar Road.
Does anybody have a 'photo of the school?I would love to have one. Do
you remember the Nativity plays and Miss Gopsill?
Aileen (Black), I remember your brother John very well. We went to the two
youth clubs - The Good Companions and Jack and Jill. We had a lovely life
then. I remember the two stone and I agree with W.Savin, I always
thought that they were meteors. Where did they go?
I don't think that you can be correct it the position of those shops. Olton
Station faces the Warwick Road and Richmond Road goes down the one side and
Ulverly Green Road goes down the other. Ulverly Green Road goes down the
hill, level out, does a right angled bend to the left up Castle lane Hill. I
think that you are correct that they are by the railway station. The
Air-raid siren, a chemist, a hairdressers, Wrensons and a couple of other
shops were there.

if anyone knew a good place to get cast iron curtain frames in the olton/solihull

Is there a problem with antisocial behaviour around Dovehouse
Parade? I am planning to buy a new home in this area but am not sure whether
to be put off by a front page report in The Solihull Times of 30 July 2004.
This says that Solihull's antisocial behaviour problem is of particular
concern in Olton, that the Olton Residents' Association has had complaints
relating to incidents around Dovehouse Parade, and that police action on a
long term basis has been judged necessary. What's going on??

Hi Olton, I lived in Barrington Road near the canal from 1945 to
1965 when we moved to Sheringham in Norfolk, when my parents William and
Gwen Black retired. I had a brother called John. Does anyone remember me? I
can remember John Wilson who lived nearby, he used to come round to play
records witrh me in the early 60s. Are you there, John? Does anyone remember
the ladies hairdressers in Castle Lane? What was it called? I remember Linda
Cherrington, don't know her married name, and a friend of mine called Carol
who worked at the hairdressers in 1959. Are you out there, as I would love
to hear from you. Finally, does anyone recall the little wooded area that
led to the bottom end of Jubilee Park? Is it still there? We had some
wonderful times there as kids, and also in later times. I love to hear from
anyone who can remember those days. Best wishes.

About two years ago there was talk of opening up Olton Mere Reservoir
for greater public access for their enjoyment instead of re-renting it on a
long term lease to the existing sailing club for a select few. Solihull
council has so far not provided any form of consultation with the local
residents for their views.
I urge that more people write to the council to open up this beauty spot for
the public.

I came across this site while doing a little nostalgic wandering through
the internet. I would like to know if the row of shops pictured is the
Dovehouse Parade or somewhere else in Olton. I lived on Reservoir Rd. as a
child between 1946 and 1958 and a bit beyond part time as I went to
University in 58. The rd looks different or wider if it is the parade. I
remember shopping for cream cakes and "sticky buns" at Wimbushes and going
to Mr Mosely's (The Chemists.) I have lived in Canada since 1967. Does
anyone out there remember these stores.. and ice lollies from Hassells??!!!!

though, thankfully not right where we live so far.
The shops shown are further up the Warwick Road
towards Acocks Green Mike, in fact just by Castle Lane and Olton Railway
Station.

Lyndon Road Shops
My brother and I have been racking our brains about the shops in Lyndon Road
in the fifties. I can remember Garners, Greengrocers. Greens (one on each
side of the road I believe - one an ironmonger of sort and the other selling
wools etc;. Jones, sweets; two pinfold shops, grocers; Lucketts - I remember
taking the old wireless battery-thing to be re-charged; Roberts, grocers;
Matthias, sweet shop and next to her Goodwins, grocers and on the end
Stallabrass. There are eight shops on each side so what were the others?

Re- Stones in Jubilee Park
I have lived in Olton for most of my life, I do remember one stone in
Jubilee Park sited on a marble pedestal, as far as I can remember it was a
large piece of quartz about 4ft circumference and 2.5ft high the other I
think was on the ground. I have a feeling that the one of them may have been
a meteorite that fell in Warwick Road Olton around the 1920s/30s, I heard
about the meteor many years ago that caused quite a bit of damage, anymore I
cannot tell you, there may be some reference to these in the local history
section at Solihull Library, in any event it gives you something to follow
up.

Hobs Moat or 'Oddingsell Moat' is believed to date from the 12th century. Once the home
of William Odingsells, who established a moated residence in 1242 when the
area was known as Ulverlei. What remains now provides fun and games for local children. Photographs |
