I am intrigued to read the comments of obvious 'non-drivers' about
the zebra crossings. I totally agree that drivers don't always stop at
the one by 'Face', but the one under the bridge? As I drive, when you
approach from Hockley Heath the light makes it difficult to see people
waiting and when you come from Knowle it is the same! Some train users
insist on just 'walking out' onto the crossing and I too am surprised no
one has been hit. Perhaps if the pedestrians were to actually look and
be aware of their surroundings things might be better, instead of
walking in a way that would not look out of place in a Mr Bean movie,
thinking how important & great they are because they commute to and from
London for a days work! If you were that great at your job you'd be
able to afford to live by your work and not have to commute each day!!!

Does anyone know what is going to happen to Forest Court, does the
council own it? we really could do with a Health Shop, a shoe repair
shop, a hardware shop, a Charity shop, even another coffee shop to bring
people in and to bring new life to the area, Joan

I am looking for information about the King family from Knowle. John and
Sarah King were my g g g grandparents. John King was a Tailor, born
around 1789. They had several children, all baptised in Knowle. Are
there any of my ancestors still living in Knowle?

Looking for information on the Thornton family who lived in Arden grove,
Dorridge. Llly Agnes Thornton died there in 1912 and i believe is buried
in Knowle churchyard. William Harold was also resident before being
killed in the Dardanelles in 1915. Arden grove isn't on the map so any
information would be appreciated.

Hi.
Re Hardware Shop Station Road
It was still a hardware shop albeit with little stock when first I moved
to the area in the late 70's. It then became a delicatessen and still
is known as Gourmet Foods. I tried to e-mail you but the address
was not recognised :(

I lived in Hanbury Road Dorridge from from the age of 3 in 1962 then
moved to Gilberry Close Knowle in the mid 70's. It was a great place to
grow up. I wrote my best known song 'Where's Captain Kirk?' on the 182
bus when coming home from rehearsals in Solihull with my new band
SPIZZENERGI in 1979. Moved to London 1980 - I thought it would be great
to do a show possibly in Solihull to mark the event in 2009 - Anyone

I remember when we all knew each other in Dorridge and don't recall
inconsiderate drivers zooming past the crossings, but i haven't lived
there since 1993. Maybe it's the people who have moved into the area,
the ones with the get out of my way cos I'm very rich and therefore more
important than you attitude. I've come across plenty of them when
visiting family. I usually just step onto the road when people do that
sort of thing to me and give them a snooty look back, but obviously I'm
not recommending that you do that. I agree that parking on double yellow
lines isn't a major crime but it's scary and very annoying when you have
to push a pram down a main road with buses going past because some
inconsiderate, able bodied person can't walk a few yards. It's not just
in Knowle and Dorridge though, i recently went to Kent and it was far
worse.

CARELESS DRIVING has been brought to the attention of the village once
and for all. There must be a stop - a ban to signalling - Have we not
asked ourselves the primary reason for the hole in the o-zone layer?
£1.2million is used in left indication energy alone, each year, in the
UK. Stop-Think! Is it not obvious where the car is going to go? Look
where the driver's eyes are looking!!
Finally, to the writer/s of previous comments about consideration from
road users i must give you this, and only this:
1. We can't see you if you are wearing a zebra costume, next to the
zebra crossing
2. Who actually cares if people don't stop at a zebra crossing - why
don't you spend your time complaining about the weather or worrying
about the price of elbow grease?
and lastly,
3. You're right. Parking on a double yellow line - now that is a crime
if i ever saw one. What could be worse? Kidnap? Murder? Or even
Kidnap-Murder? If the police aren't out stopping the parking of cars on
double yellow lines, then what are we paying taxes for?
Please, if anybody has any views on the issue or would like to contact
me, do not hesitate to get in touch.

I totally agree with your comments re drivers not signalling their
intentions. Particularly in my part of the world, when going round a
roundabout, Another bane is them going against CLEARLY marked arrows on
car parks. I have been to your part of the country and it is really
beautiful, (oh the Wharf at Hockley Heath), but sadly these days
inconsideration seems to be endemic. (A car driver with more years
experience than I care to think about). I am from Crewe.

Drivers in this area are downright rude, all willing to shake their
heads when there is an accident but still unwilling to stop and allow
someone to cross the road safely whether at a zebra crossing or not. I
am not yet legally able to drive but I still view it as common sense and
well-mannered to stop and allow people to cross roads, particularly if
it's raining.

I am sick and tired of inconsiderate motorists in Knowle and Dorridge.
Some of the things which really annoy me are;
* Their refusal to use indicators, which invariably implies that
the driver is not using their mirrors at all
and have no concept that there may be people around them!
* Driving far too close to you when you are traveling at the speed
limit (thereabouts)! Annoying and not
to mention dangerous considering I ride a motorcycle.
* Parking on double yellows next to the bus stop/HSBC on station
approach!
* Not letting cars pull out (generally being inconsiderate).
* Stopping without signalling.
* Pulling out without signalling.
* I seem to have come full circle and so must mention the lack of
mirror use again! There are many
more points but these seem to be prevalent in K/D - people
just seem to be more courteous drivers
the further away you go.
Sorry for the rant and rave as I realise many drivers can be courteous,
but after being nearly knocked over when turning on to Station Approach
and then being told it was my fault I really have had enough. I can't
stand this "Dorridge" mentality that seems to make these drivers believe
they are somehow 'better' than everyone else. I can't be alone in this
can I?

I'm fed up with people not stopping for me on the zebra crossings and
blatently ignoring me, it's just arogant driving.
Also, on Max's comment, I had never noticed the speed of cars through
dorridge centre to be a problem. Prehaps if they didn't ignore zebra
crossings it might help though.

I am concerned once again with the downright arrogant comments from
people. While I agree that old people should not have to earn young
peoples respect, neither should young people have to earn older peoples
respect. I more often see older people drunk and disorientated than I do
young people, talk about leading by example. Similarly I just as often
see older people pushing in queues, assuming they have right of way on
pavements and not stopping to allow young people to cross when it is
tipping it down with rain despite the fact they are dry and warm and it
would add a few seconds max to their journey. I have often waited after
school for 5 or 10 minutes before being able to cross. Maybe if older
people had a bit more respect young people would as well.

Knowle's problems with young people with nothing to do is no different
from many places including Australia where I live now.
When I was living there from birth 1936 to 1960 there was a youth club
on Sat now pulled down( no Church connection), the 1st Knowle Boy Scouts
and Guides and the rest of the time we were too busy with homework from
school or playing sport to get anywhere near a pub. Of course we were
not allowed there by our parents. What do Knowle parents do on a

way the new house built next to the park is on a blind bend...despite

I am upset to come onto this page to find older residents making
derogatory comments about the younger generations. At current there is
one youth club run independently of a church. A number of young people
do not feel comfortable in a church they do not belong to. So lets assume
each young person in Dorridge goes to a youth club run by there church
and Knowle youth centre, that's 2 nights they are busy. Then assuming
every young person goes out and joins the sea scouts (which isn't very
likely as oddly some people don't want to join "sea scouts") then
that's 3
nights busy which still leaves them with 4 nights free in a week. So now
they go and join one other club on Saturday daytime. That leaves them
with the same number of nights free. See the problem? Youth centres have
age groups and due to this you can only go once a week. Kids will be
kids, researching I can see that a lot of the last generation who seem
to be complaining here got up to much worse. People need to get a grip.
Recently I saw a man ranting at a group of young people for dropping a
chocolate bar wrapper. Well maybe it would help if there was a bin
within a few hundred meters. If you think living here is terrible I
challenge you to go live in a lovely area such as Chelmsley wood, then
try telling me that the kids around here are terrible.

It is interesting to read all the comments about young people in Knowle
and Dorridge, and the provision of activities for that age group.
There are in fact a number of youth groups in the area, I am involved
with one of the largest - Knowle Sea Scout Group. We have at the moment
60 regular members, all excellent young people aged 10-18 that are
'taken off the streets' every Friday night, and are also away for many
weekends through the year. We also have a further 80 young people aged
6-10 in our younger sections. We have an excellent retention rate,
with nearly 100% of those that come for one night joining. We do
struggle however with equipment, finances, and support. We receive no
money from the local authority or elsewhere, and all adults involved are
unpaid volunteers. To find out what we do visit

I think if the council woke up and invested some money into
real projects like building a decent big skate park or a 24/7 youth club
with decent facilities the youths of Knowle wouldn't cause so much
problems. look at the skate park in Solihull its the size of a shoe box.
its disgraceful they should listen to the younger generation instead of
thinking they know best, the council suck!

We are hoping to
move to the Knowle/Dorridge area some time in the summer. We have a 4
year old and a 1 year old. Is there anything in the area for toddlers
and young children, such as a Mother's & Toddler's group or sports and
activity classes? It would help them (and us) settle into the area more
quickly. Thanks.

Hi! In response to
Sarah's comment, I do know a Sarah Webb and went to Knowle school. What
is all this about one stop closing? anyone who goes to Arden, what do
you think of the new head teacher

The new toddlers
play area in Bentley Heath park is good. I didn't realise that we were
sacrificing the two slides for the skate park. We now have nothing at
all for the children aged between 6 and 14 years! Is anything planned?
Swings, slides, roundabout, and climbing frames would be ideal - but not
at the expense of the skate park or the toddler area.

Closure of Dorridge Post Office.
We have just discovered that the One Stop Shop will be closing in July and converting in
to a Tesco Express. Good news perhaps. However, the leaflet states that as a result, the
Post Office will close and not re-open.
Tesco have invited comments on 0800 505555

The comments made about Knowle are quite interesting but not in enough depth. Does
anyone know anymore about knawel's history?

Reading the comments about drinking in the parks, can I just say as a parent of two,
aged 35, that the tradition of park drinking goes way back ...well er... the early 80`s
and no doubt before. Even then we were bemoaned as being hooligans and now look at us,
boring stay at homes. At least we also had the Youth club disco on a Friday night to
smuggle our booze into or drink behind the Methodist church. I just hope the "youth
of today" are having as much fun as we did!

I completely agree with Gemmas comment on how the older residents of Knowle and
Dorridge look down on teenagers. I have not seen any of the teenagers around Knowle and
Dorridge treating older people with disrespect. I can see what the 'older' people must be
intimidated by when groups of us are walking down the street but where else is there to
go? Which brings me on to the park.. We only drink at the park because residents complain
about them looking 'shifty' in the streets when we are only really standing around
chatting.. Please have more faith in us!!!

I moved to Bentley Heath a few months ago but I have yet to look around I'm only 16
and I was wondering if someone around my age could tell what there id for fun? the park
looks old and reading through the comments on this page everyone else seems to think so
too. I have one other question does anybody know how far back Bentley Heath goes and if
there are websites where I can get old maps and things as I love things like time team

The park is due to undergo construction soon for a skate park. I am a member of Solihull
Youth Council I know these things it has been in the pipeline for about 1 year.

I was just wondering if there is anyone still in the area who went to the playschool
or Nursery school in Knowle around 1991/1992? Perhaps the names Sarah Webb or Paul ?
somebody? Sorry I can't be more detailed but it was over 10 years ago and i was only 2 or
three at the time! Also, does anyone remember the Taylor family of Hainfield drive who
move to Southampton in 1993?

Drinking in The Park
Drinking in Dorridge park on a Friday evening has become a major part of K+D's youth
culture over number of years. This tradition has been going on since 1995 and I'm sure
will continue for a long time coming. I know that many people see our tradition as an
eyesore and a nuisance but without Dorridge, Bentley Heath and Knowle park, many secondary
school youth's lives would be in turmoil. Where would you adults prefer us to be? On the
streets? We are much safer in the park especially during the long summer evenings when it
stays light until late. Going down to the park of an evening made my years as a young
teenager more memorable and enjoyable. I have learnt more about "life lessons"
from going down to the park than that of any lesson at school. I know that some people
leave a mess but if the council provided more facilities to dispose of our rubbish in more
convenient locations, maybe there would be less of a mess the following Saturday morning.
I'm not encouraging the dangers of drinking in excess especially underage but not much can
be done to prevent this, in many cases, people learn from their mistakes. Since I can
remember, at the end of the exams in yr 11, the whole year congregates to celebrate five
years of secondary education. I cant see the problem with this so please, keep the
complaining to a minimum, we are only enjoying our youth.

Despite now studying at Aberystwyth I am still at heart a resident of Knowle. in
response to Gemma's problem with the local chemist I have this to say. Its not you
personally but actually quite a lot of Knowles youth are seen as yobs this is partially
due to the way that they treat older people as old fogies. If you want respect you will
have to earn it. A good way to do this is to start helping in the community. See the
church and local council for ways to get involved.

Hey I love Knowle, and we all know each other because it's so small which I love!
Knowle has a great history. But as a teenager myself, I don't like the way some of the
older residents sometimes look upon me and my friends as juveniles when we have just as
much right as them to be around Knowle and we don't do anything wrong. And some of the
staff in the chemist are extremely rude!!

Can someone tell me where the policing is for the "alcohol prohibited" area
in jobs close park, I think the situation with youths drinking alcohol in the park late at
night is getting out of hand.
Can anyone tell me why we have park rangers, when one can walk through jobs close park
every Saturday morning and fin the area by the kids playground totally strewn with empty
beer cans and alcohol bottles.

My G/Grandmother (VINES) was brought up in a cottage by a towpath at Bentley Heath.
Her brother Charlie Vines lived there for many years, working at the Drum&
Monkey until the 1950's (Aged About80) he also kept prize winning pigs. Does any one
remember him or the family?

generations as well... I love Knowle

I think it's about time the council spent money on updating the play area/equipment in
Knowle Park - Jobs Close, the state of which is poor.

From viewing the web page on our local area it appears very historic, traditional and
formal. Why not consider the younger market in the region and perhaps include recreational
activities, for example, Knowle park, Knowle and Dorridge cricket club, Knowle youth
centre etc? It's as if Knowle and Dorridge only have to offer churches and lovely high
streets with small shops. I'm not stating that this is bad, in fact it is important to
conserve our heritage, but it would be nice to see the future of Knowle and Dorridge to.

Knowle's
Sci-fi Connection
The picture postcard view which greets drivers passing
through Knowle is unlikely to provoke images of The Village of the Damned. But there is a
connection! The author, John Wyndham, one of the greatest names in science fiction
history, was born in Knowle 100 years ago
