Heya! im 17 and i went to Damson Wood from 93 then went to coppice. I moved to the middle east for a couple of years n now live in scotland... anyone remember me!?! Laura Barr
Hi Guys! Coppice was the best school eveeeeeer! (Dorridge, Arden and Damsonwood come in close though) Many memories of Coppice will stay with me forever. I went to Coppice from 1998 to 2002 (where I left just after the frist half term of year 6). My Teachers were as follows Yr3 - Miss Dunkley (Later Mrs Forbes - I went to your wedding in my pink fluffy hat remember?!) Yr4 - Miss Hindmarsh (Umm scary stories about headless mummies in museums at midnight and eyeballs that were pickled onions!) Yr5 - Mr Rintoul (Fab and Groovy!!) Yr6 - Miss Henson (Choir and Symphony Hall in Reach out and Touch - Who would have thought I'd be doing a solo in a sister performance three years later?) Mrs Armstrong was so cool and taught me maths. I used to be a right boff. Mrs Forbes used to call me a bookworm! Mr Coxon did chess club where I think I won three matches in my two years at the club! Oh yes, and that was where Chris was swingig on his chair and slipped, making his nose bleed and causing a scar - and he was sitting next to me! (Hi Chris) Jess - Do you still not like Harry Potter?! (How???) To The Glitz Girls and the gang (Grace, Izzy, Ali, Gayatri) - I.P!? How cool was that? Don't worry Alison - I won't explain and embarress you! And do you remember the nests and the clubhouse? With those squirrels Megnut and Nutmeg? OhMyGosh - The Air raid shelter! We used to play a kind of tig where someone was on, and when they touched the painted heart, whomever they touched enxt, they were in love with! Aww we were all so innocent - and cute! (With dorky hair) Love you all and loads of hugs Jessica Singer Hi to all the people on here who know me - Precious, May, Jess, Chris. P.S. You might be surprised to see how different I look - gone is the wavy triangular hair and those Harry Potter glasses - I've got cool glasses (and hopefully contacts soon) and straight hair. Yes, me - straight hair!

1960's |
G'day from Australia, I attended Coppice from 1964 to 1968 I think. My dad was a police officer and we lived in the police house at 264 Damson Lane. I visited about 15 years ago and found my name in the school register and visited the old house which had become a police office. I recall walking to school through the coppice along side the field between the end of our house and the school...it's all houses now of course. On weekends we used to walk down a lane into the woods and collect frog spawn and pick bluebells, not to mention collect conkers for competition. I recall the cloak room where we would hang our Macs and duffle bags, and change our shoes. We used to make slides in the first snow out in the playground. Yes, I remember Mrs Matthews, what a lovely lady she was. I remember Mrs Castleton, Miss McMillan, Mrs Kirk who had a baby and I bought a yellow baby hair brush for her, Miss Parker who first taught me French, Mr Hamby, and Mrs Cole the headmistress who was replaced by Mr Collins. I remember well the air-raid shelter where the sports equipment was kept, and where Miss Bulmer used to keep her bicycle. I remember walking hand in hand around the field with Albert, with whom I was sure I was in love at the age of 5! We used to go down the back corner of the field and through the fence. One day I slipped down the muddy slope, and Mrs Foster the cleaner who lived in the house opposite the school, brought me a clean pair of her daughter's underwear. Friends I remember from that time are Carolyn Walters on Damson Lane, Noela Clarke who lived with her grandmother on Damson Lane, Wendy Waine who lived on Lugtrout Lane, Stephanie, whose last name I forget and the twins who lived on Astor Lane (I think that's the name). I also remember Christine Burton as I always tried to do better than her in class. Does anyone remember Mrs Peprils store with the big jars of sweets? I left to complete year 4 in Sutton Coldfield, went to Sutton Coldfield Girls Grammar for two terms, and then came out to Australia at the age of 12. Thanks for the great trip down memory lane. I love to hear from anyone around that time. Elaine Crump
I attended Coppice Road school in 1952.
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. I am living in New
Zealand now.

1950's |
I am currently writing a fantasy book about a school. One of my
characters is based on Mrs Mumford who I recall may have been a teacher
in the mid 50s when I started there. I'm sure she used to take the class
out on the grass and read the most magical stories to us in the summer
term. I remember this time of year the wonderful smell of blossom from
the Hawthorn bushes. We were so lucky to be on the edge of the green
belt (sadly now all built on ) I remember the wooden fence around the
field smelling of tar. 'The willows' 'Duttons Pond' Mrs Cole Mrs
Matthews Mr Sharman and a violent teacher who beat the legs of a number
of us boys for going out of the school during the lunch time and we had
to stand on the veranda to show the bruised backs of our legs to the
other children. Mr Davies wouldn't get away with that today if he were
still alive!!!! I lived in Damson Lane and I loved it. I can remember
one of the extreme winters. Not sure which year? We were tough. We would
walk on the frozen cut for miles to Cathrine de barns and past the old
gas works, where on a Saturday morning my dad would get bags of coke
for the fire, in the other direction! Oh if only my young sons could
have such innocence and wonderment now, as we had then. How this world
has changed and not for the better! Bring back space ships, cremola
foam, waggon wheels those little milk bottles filled with orange raffia
mats which I never had time to finish! But definitely not the Mr Davies
of this world!!

1940's |
1943 I started Coppice school and remember most of the above comments. I
lived at the end of Coppice Road last house on the left and remember the
Carrick twins, Pat Harris, Marion shuttleworth, Maureen Woodlands,
Donald Gregory and many many more. I also remember our coats drying on
the guard around the stove, I also remember Mrs Mathews she was a lovely
lady and didn't we have respect for our teachers they certainly
frightened the life out of me. So much has happened in my life and I now
live in Shropshire. Another name that comes to mind is Trevor Thornton,
its amazing how names come back I do wonder what has happened to all
these people. It was such a small school in those days and I remember
the very high Desk the teachers had and the dentists visit in the
library. I also remember playing truant one day and I sat up a tree and
watched the school, why I shall never remember but I was worried incase
my Dad found out, but he didn't. Memories are great things I hope more
people add to this, I found it quite by chance, keep on writing.
Jan Davies (nee Hassall)
I went to coppice road school in the 40s.Mrs Robinson
was the headmistress, Mrs Mathews also was a teacher and lived just
across the road in Damson Lane, I left to go to Lode Heath School in
1947.My cousin John Eden also went to Coppice Rd anyone know what became
of him he lived in Heath Rd. What became of Margaret Pickles, Doreen
Barratt, Gill Wilkes just to name a few,I spent many happy years in
Elmdon Heath, does the school ever have a reunion for former pupils,
anyone out there I would love to hear from you.
Grace Roberts.
Grace Roberts (Buxton)
I attended Coppice Junior school from 1942 to
1948,it was just a long wooden building in those days with an outside
corridor and an air raid shelter at the side of the playground.
We had milk delivered by Dick Poulton in his Wacaden milk lorry, little
third pint bottles and in the winter they froze up and the teachers put them
at the side of the stoves in the classroom to thaw out it was foul.
Mrs Mumford served the school dinners which came each day by van from Lode
Heath, she lived on Damson Lane.
I can remember cheese and potato pie, jam sponge with pink custard, lumpy
semolina and soggy cabbage, those were the days. We used to swim in the
canal off Cox's field until John Fleetwood got diphtheria and was rushed off
in the green ambulance to Catney Isolation Hospital, and that ended swimming
in the cut. Hope this brings back memories of the 40's. would like to hear
from anyone who was at Coppice in those days

I started at Coppice Road in 1947 which was the year in which you left John.
I can't remember the air raid shelter, but I do remember the milk and the
the school dinners. The dinners especially, which used to cost 6d a day and
which although may have been considered nourishing, drove a group of us to
walk down to the shops on Damson Lane and into a cake shop. We had the
choice of a 3d or a 4d cake, choice depending on what kind of sweets were
available in one of the other shops in the row and how much we could get
considering rationing. Needless to say, we were eventually found out, and
from then on we had to take the whole weeks money (2/6d) on the Monday
morning.
Other memories are of Mrs Robinson the Headmistress, and Mrs Matthews one of
the teachers, who used to live in one of the houses across from the school.
There were three other teachers, two men, and one young woman who used to
teach in the first year. There was I believe a dividing wall between the two
central classrooms which were opened for morning prayers which come to mind,
and also the soccer pitch next to the playground, with the long jump pit
between the pitch and the boundary fence.
Some names that also come to mind as I write this are Molly Atkins, David
Lakin, John Bird, Gillian (Bromley or Kimberly?) and Melvin and David
Freeman who were at Coppice Road during this time.
I remember the story not the occasion regarding Cox's field, but did not
know who the recipient was. Having to cross the cut to get to school each
day was always a challenge, more for our parents than us, and when the swing
and roundabout was put in on the playing field behind the houses next to the
canal, being late to and from school only added to the problem.
Thanks for bringing back a few memories John, Will write again if more come
to mind.
Roger Harris
