My Grand mother (Alston) was the last family to live at Elmdon Hall before
it was demolished! Any information would be appreciated.
Philip West

Elmdon Hall Built 1780 Demolished 1956
Elmdon Hall was built by Abraham Spooner and was passed to his son
Isaac. On his death the estate was sold to William Alston who passed
it on to his son - also William and known as Squire Alston. Squire Alston
remained a bachelor until his death in 1916 when the estate passed to his
sister Mrs Alston-Roberts West of Stratford. In July 1930 the Hall was sold
at auction for the sum of £3,700 to a Mr Walters who later sold to it to the
council and was used by the Home Guard during the war years. The building
was allowed to deteriorate and became derelict. It was demolished in 1956.

Badham
I am seeking information about Pear Tree Farm,Yardley Wood Road,
Solihull Lodge. My family & I lived in one of the wooden bungalows (locally
called "huts")on the grounds of this farm, from 1948-1953. I believe the
"huts" had been there for some time. Presumably Pear Tree Farm and the huts
were demolished to make way for the housing Estate now known as Pear Tree
Crescent. Does anyone have any photos of these fields/bungalows or indeed
the farm & does anyone know when the farm & bungalows were demolished & who
built the houses now on the grounds of these fields, which roamed down to
the canal. Any information would be appreciated.

Bannister (Banister)
I've traced my family back to about 1790 in Birmingham. My GGGG-Grandfather
Charles Banister and all his brothers and sisters were born in Hampton in
Arden Parish in the late 1790's and all of his children were born in Balsall
Heath in the early 1800's. I've found much information about my GGG
Grandfather Charles but I have found NOTHING other than the marriage and a
possible birth record in Hampton in Arden for his father Charles. I have not
found him at all in any census, but I have found his wife Susannah (Davies)
Bannister in 1841,1851,& 1861. She died at the Balsall Commons Almshouses in
1867 and her death is registered in Solihull. I'm hoping someone can help me
find a death record for him. He was born in about 1790 in Birmingham. I've
searched high and low and have found nothing. Any ideas????????

Barrs Family - Warwickshire
I am descended from a prominent Toft Hamlet (Dunchurch Village)
Warwickshire farming and livestock family that came from Bulkington Village
Warwickshire to Toft Hamlet near Dunchurch Village in 1612. William Bares (Barrs)
who died in 1559/60 was born in Bulkington Village and Robert Barres (Barrs),
his father, who died in 1595 in Bulkington may also have been born there of
yet unknown parents. However he may have been born elsewhere, perhaps in
Market Bosworth in Leicestershire, which is only a few miles from Bulkington
Village. Thomas Barrs, a son of Robert Barrs, moved from Bulkington Village
to Toft Hamlet in 1612. Abraham Barrs of Toft was born to Thomas Barrs in
Toft Hamlet. Abraham Barrs of Toft was the first of many Barrs farmers to
break land and raise livestock in Warwickshire and the family did so for
several hundred years from 1612. One of my known first ancestors, John Barrs
born in 1727 in Toft Hamlet to John Barrs of Toft, was the first, but not
the last Barrs of Warwickshire, to immigrate to "The Colonies in America."
He did so along with his new bride Sarah Spears in 1750. I would welcome any
information on the BARRS family in early Warwickshire, Leicestershire or
other shires of England.
Al Barrs
Bayliss
I'm looking for details of the Bayliss family who lived on the Mount off
Creynolds Lane in the 1940s. They lived in a converted bus. Does anyone have
any memories of the area or the family in particular? I know there was an
article in the Birmingham Evening Mail (or maybe the Solihull News) about
them in the 1980s but no one thought to keep a copy at the time! Any
memories will be very gratefully received! Thanks.

California and Pennsylvania U.S. Hitting a wall regarding Frank's father.
They are from Acocks Green Birmingham. Fanny Robbins family was from
Shirley/Langley Warwickshire area. How they met and married we do not know.
But I am sure they had brothers and sisters who may have carried down
information. All the children sent to Canada had wonderful lives and
children who loved them, although Harry Beech died in WW1, unmarried at age
23 fighting for Canada. Any relative once or twice removed out there? We
would love to hear from you.

Bird- Thomas & Elizabeth Callow
I have been researching the BIRD line in England for a couple of years now
and have come to a dead end at Thomas BIRD. I know my BIRD Ancestors were
mostly living in Solihull. I feel like if I could get my hands on some

continue on my research. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thomas and
Elizabeth's son was John Bird who married a Mary. They have a son John Bird
who married Elizabeth Taylor. They had a son John Bird who married Ann
Russon. This very family left Birmingham, England in 1855 to travel to

A kind couple found info on Abraham, my ggrandfather. He was b.1845,not
1830,and his dad was also Abraham, a surprise which helped solve some of the
mystery. Abe jr. was b.Aston, lived in Arley, m. Sarah Wright from
Arley 1867 in Arley church. On the 1881 census she is with her son Henry as
head of hsld. Abe jr went to Algoa Bay (Port Elizabeth) in 1880 on USS
Africa. From then on, I can find no trace of him, tho' there's an entry on
the 1901 census of someone of the same name in Marton, Lancs, as plasterer,
aged 57,Hd of hsld. previously he 'd been a farmer in Ansley on his own or
his dad's farm, sold off in 1870(Ox Hayes Farm). Is it likely he might have
turned to plastering? If this isn't him, I feel he could have stayed in
Africa or even gone down with the ship. Can anyone help, please?
Thanks.

Insull Burman
I am looking for information on a man called Insull Burman, who lived
in my house in Sydenham, London between 1909 and the 1930's. I believe that
he probably died whilst living here, as the resident for 1933 is listed as
Mrs Burnham. I am wondering if there is any connection between the man who
once lived here and the Burman family who are profiled on your pages. As I
have never come across the name Insull before I suspect it is probably a
family name.
Tammy Williams
Just noticed a message from Tammy Williams on the Solihull Online web site,
asking for information about a man called Insull Burman. Not sure whether
this helps her, but I have a fairly extensive Burman family tree on our own
family web site and this does include an Insull John Burman who died in the
1930s although I have no information to confirm whether this is the same
Insull Burman that lived in her house in Sydenham. As she suspects, Insull
is indeed a common name in the Burman family as she will see from the tree.

August 1947 at home in Rangoon Road, Solihull. I know that at the time she

regarding my dads maternal family. I am even struggling to locate her place

Nolan, John Patrick
My uncle John Nolan, born 1928 was in the Father Hudson's Childrens Home,
Coleshill from around 1935 until he left, not sure when. All attempts over
the last 25 years by me, (his niece) to trace him sadly drew a blank.
What sort of life did John have in the Home, and where did he go on leaving?
Did John settle, have a family, and do I have cousins who like me are
wondering about their lost kin? My Mother, his young sister died in 2006,
and she too was in care from a year old in her case, growing up not knowing
about her oldest brother John, or the fact that he had been sent to another
Care Home. Were you in the Father Hudson's Home, Coleshill during the mid
1930's - 1950 era? I am interested in hearing from anyone who was, just to
get a vivid picture of what his life from the child's perspective, even if
they do not have a memory of actually knowing John Nolan personally. John
had a younger brother Bernard who was also at the Coleshill Home, but left
not knowing what had become of his older brother. I wrote to the Birmingham
Mail almost 25 years ago and was able to find information about Bernard

large family and one son, also named Isaac, married a Phoebe Cottrill. This
is as far as I can trace my family tree. I know there were others with the
surnames of Reddall and Jennings in the Solihull area in the 18th century,
but I have not been able to establish any links. I would be grateful for any
relevant information.

Reeve
I am writing from Ottawa, Canada. My great grand-father, Robert Reeve,
apparently lived on a farm in Barston, close to the road from Stonebridge, I
believe. His wife's name was Elizabeth, maiden name Hood. His son,
Henry John, my grand-father was born April 11th 1867 and married Fanny
Chataway of Balsall or Berkswell. If anyone has any information about
these families, or the location of the farm, I should appreciate hearing
from them.

Reynolds
Any information please on the Reynolds family believed to farm somewhere in
Barston prior to and during the war years. They had six?
sons one of whom was called Geoffrey.
Joanna Baker
Reynolds - Essex
I'm helping my mother with her family tree.
Her grandmother, Edith REYNOLDS, was born in Solihull 1866. In 1891
Edith was living on Mill Lane with her grandfather William Reynolds and her
daughter Esther Reynolds (b. 1886).
In 1901 Edith was living with James ESSEX and four children (Esther b.1886,
James b.1891, Edith b.1893 and Lily b.1895). James Essex was the grandson of
Henry Essex and Priscilla Nason.
After 1901 Edith had four additionally children (Violet b.1901, Harry
b.1903, Doris b.? and Ivy b.? - Violet was my grandmother).
The family was split up in the early 1900s when James Essex was in jail.
Four children were sent to Canada by Middlemore Homes (James and Edith in
1903 to New Brunswick, Violet and Harry in 1907 to Nova Scotia) and four
stayed in England (Esther, Lily, Ivy and Doris).
I would like very much to find out what happened to the children who stayed
in England especially Esther and Lily as I think Ivy and Doris may have died
as infants.
We don't know who Esther and Lily married (or if they even married).
We're not even sure if they used Reynolds or Essex as their maiden name -
nothing good was ever said about the father so one or both probably used
their mother's maiden name, Reynolds.
All we know is that Edith's daughter Edith told her son that one of her
sister's (probably Esther or Lily) was working for the Middlemore Homes at
the end of WW1. Since Esther (the oldest) was born in 1886, I
think she may have left the family (married?) before James and Edith were
sent to Canada in 1903. Lily was younger than James and Edith and she
was older than Violet and Harry. There's no record that Lily was sent
to Canada, but maybe she's the one who was working for Middlemore.
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time, Sue

early 1900's. They can be found on all the censuses in and around the
Hatchford Brook area - Sheldon, Lyndon End, Bickenhill and in 1901 at the
Ulleries, Solihull. Any information appreciated. Thanks, Dave.

Veal or Veale
My Great Great Great Great Grandfather Joseph VEAL (the spelling varies
between VEAL and VEALE) was living in Solihull in the 1780s and 1790s.
He married Jane Wall in Solihull in 1782 but she and their two sons both
died in the next few years. He then married Ann Green in Tanworth in
1792 although they came back to live in Solihull. Their only son
Richard VEAL whose name somehow became Richard VALE went to Birmingham
around 1818 and I have traced the family from him through to my generation.
There were many VEALs and VEALEs living in the Solihull area through the
18th Century. I am unable to trace which ones are Joseph VEAL's
parents and any information, help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ward
Researching the Ward family of Temple Balsall. Thomas Anstey Ward and his
wife Ellen married in 1875 and had 13 children - John Thomas, George
Summers, Joseph Anstey, William Henry, James Garret, Alice Mary, Arthur
Herbert, Percy Victor, Francis Howard, Walter Harry, Sidney Harold.
Thomas Anstey Ward was a farmer - his brother Joseph farmed in Barston.
Alice Mary married William Hancock and lived in the Rugby area. Francis was
my grandfather. Where did all the others go? Some moved to Balsall Common,
Meriden and Kenilworth. Would love to get in touch with cousins/second
cousins etc to build up the family tree.

Ward - Agnes May
Agnes May Ward was my Grandmother. Born 1884 at Holly Lane Farm Temple
Balsall to Thomas Anstey Ward and Ellen Ward (Nee Summers). She was one of
thirteen children who were split up when their father died in 1896. Agnes
May went to live with her Aunt and Uncle, Georgina and Joseph Ward at
Barston PArk Farm, Barston, Warwicks. Agnes became a barmaid. I am Jennifer
Yates (nee Ward) and my father Archibald Ward, born in Olton 1906, was the
illegitimate son of Agnes May (father unknown). I am searching for anyone
with any knowledge of what happened to Agnes May post 1906, any information
about the early life of Archibald, or indeed any information about the Ward
family of Temple Balsall. Is there anyone out there who can help? My father
died when I was five, have no one to ask and would love to fill in
this huge gap in my past. Please e mail me - I would love to hear from any
friends or family no matter how distant!

Ward
Agnes May Ward - was my great grandmother. She was a domestic servant
in Old Warwick |Road in 1906 when she had an illegitimate son Archibald Ward
(my grandad). He was baptised at St Margrets Church in August 1906. On his
baptismal records Agnes Mays address was Kentish New Town Olton. She had at
some time moved to this new address. Archibald was brought up in care homes
- but we do not know when he was given up or indeed why. Archibald died when
my mother was only five years old so we have very little history from his
side of the family. We are trying to find out anything about his mother
Agnes May - was there a home for unmarried mothers in Olton at the time? Why
did she move to Kentish New Town? What happened to her after she gave
Archibald up?
And any information about where Archibald may have been brought up in care?
What were the local childrens homes? Were there any `foster` homes - he was
very close to a `Grandma Hastings` who we believe was from Hampton in Arden
or Knowle or Dorridge - was she a foster mother? Anyone who has any
information which may be of any help please get in touch...many thanks

Warden
I am looking for information of a Henry Rogers Warden, born 12/20/1739.
His father (whom I have no name) Sr. Warden, lived in Birmingham, england.
I would like to find out who Henry rogers Warden's father was? I think
that his mother's maiden name might have been Rogers. Henry went to
Oxford College, nearly for the full four years, but due to a large debt he
incurred while at Oxford, Henry left and went to America. Henry
dropped his last name of Warden, when he came to America. He did so
because his father would not help him to pay off his debts. I
think that the Sr. Warden must have owned a large estate in Birmingham to
have been able to send Henry to Oxford. Any information would be
wonderful! thank you

On a Different Note

The 'Spanish Lady' was an epidemic of influenza that swept the
globe between 1918 -1919 killing more than 25 million people. Within a few months, more
than 500,000 Americans and 225,000 British died from the flu.
Worldwide more died than were killed during both The Great War and the second World
War combined.
One of the major unusual features of the pandemic was the age-distribution of those who
succumbed. The majority were between twenty and forty tears old.
It is possible that the epidemic shortened the Great War as the railways in France
and Germany were almost brought to a halt from lack of men to run them.
Despite our best efforts to kill, maim, and disfigure each other deliberately in war, a
more powerful and perhaps more effective killer, came from within the walls of our own
homes. |
